New-car prices and specifications below apply to Mazda’s announced 2026 U.S. lineup; older model years and other markets can differ.
1. Make sure a two-seat roadster fits your life
The MX-5 Miata has two seats. Consider who and what you need to carry, your commute, and the weather where you drive. Check the actual car with your usual bags and passenger rather than assuming it can replace a larger vehicle. Mazda’s current model information is at Mazda USA’s MX-5 Miata page.
2. Choose the roof type deliberately
Soft top
The conventional convertible roof is the straightforward choice if you want an open-air roadster. Inspect its material, seals and operation on a used car, and follow the instructions in the manual for that model year.
RF retractable fastback
The RF has a powered hard roof. Mazda says the roof opens or closes in about 13 seconds; verify its operation on the exact car rather than relying on the seller’s description. 3. Match transmission and trim to how you want to drive
For the 2026 U.S. lineup, Sport and Club are manual-only. Grand Touring is available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. Equipment and available combinations can change by year, so compare the vehicle’s window sticker or VIN-linked equipment list instead of relying on the trim badge alone.
4. Treat the new-car MSRP as a starting point
Mazda North American Operations’ January 27, 2026 announcement lists these U.S. starting MSRPs. The destination and handling charge is separate: $1,315, or $1,360 in Alaska, effective August 11, 2026. Neither figure establishes a dealer’s out-the-door total; confirm current local pricing, taxes and fees.

5. Know what the Club trim adds
Mazda lists Bilstein dampers, a front shock tower brace, an induction sound enhancer, an asymmetric conical clutch-type limited-slip differential and DSC-Track mode among the 2026 Club equipment. The optional soft-top Brembo/BBS/Recaro package adds specified brakes, wheels, seats and aerodynamic items; Mazda says that package is standard on RF Club models. Package content can vary by year, so verify the sticker and equipment on the exact vehicle.

6. Compare real-world utility and ownership costs
Assess the cabin and trunk with what you actually carry, and request an insurance quote using the specific VIN. Insurance, repair and ownership costs depend on the car and driver; a universal cost figure is not established here. A used car’s price should also be weighed against any immediate work identified during inspection.
7. Check recalls by VIN
Use the NHTSA recall lookup with the VIN or license plate to check for unrepaired safety recalls, then ask the seller for repair documentation. NHTSA notes that its lookup may not yet show a newly announced campaign before all affected VINs are identified; it also excludes some categories, including most recalls more than 15 years old, international-vehicle recalls and certain other cases. Recheck if a campaign was recently announced. Manufacturers provide recall remedies without charge.

8. Inspect the body, underside and mechanical condition
Look for evidence, not assumptions about a model-wide problem. Mazda’s maintenance guidance calls for checking body condition for rust, corrosion and perforation. Its CPO inspection list also includes rust, frame or unibody damage, drivetrain leaks, fuel lines and brakes. These are useful areas to examine, not proof that every Miata has those faults.
- Check the unibody and underside for rust, damage or signs of repair.
- Look for fluid leaks and inspect fuel lines, brakes, tires and suspension.
- Check warning lights and have unexplained symptoms diagnosed.
- Operate the roof fully and inspect its material and seals.
- Test the transmission and clutch or automatic behavior during a careful road test; have abnormal noises, slipping or difficult operation assessed.
A clean vehicle-history report does not prove mechanical condition. An independent pre-purchase inspection is a sensible choice, especially if you cannot assess the underside yourself. Mazda’s CPO inspection information and maintenance guidance identify additional checks.

9. Verify records, modifications and coverage for that car
Ask for dated maintenance and repair invoices, ownership records and explanations for material gaps. Review modifications and request parts and installation records. Mazda cautions that non-genuine parts and accessories can affect performance or safety systems; warranty treatment depends on the circumstances and applicable law.
Do not assume that a used car still has its original vehicle warranty or that CPO status means every type of coverage applies. Confirm coverage using the VIN, mileage, date of first sale, jurisdiction and applicable warranty booklet. Mazda says warranty terms vary by country and points owners to the relevant booklet; its manuals are available through Mazda’s owner resources.
For context, the EPA describes general federal emissions coverage of two years or 24,000 miles for performance warranties and eight years or 80,000 miles for specified major emissions components. These periods start from original sale and carry component and jurisdiction conditions; they are not Mazda’s complete vehicle warranty or a VIN-specific coverage determination. Check the EPA emissions-warranty overview and confirm the actual vehicle’s status.
10. Keep specifications tied to the model year
Mazda lists the 2026 U.S. MX-5’s 2.0-liter engine at 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, with a 7,500 rpm redline. Mazda USA gives manual-transmission models an EPA-estimated 26 mpg city, 34 highway and 29 combined. These are published specifications and estimates, not results from a road test. Older generations, other model years and automatic configurations may differ; check the exact year and configuration in Mazda’s model information and EPA fuel-economy lookup.
