10 Things That Made the Saturn Ion Red Line Stand Out

The Saturn Ion Red Line paired a factory-supercharged Ecotec and close-ratio manual with chassis, brake, tire, seat, and styling changes built around performance.

The 2004–2007 Saturn Ion Red Line stood out because it combined a factory-supercharged engine and performance-focused manual transmission with track-developed chassis and brake changes. Recaro seats, performance tires, driver-oriented details, and distinctive Quad Coupe styling completed a package that went well beyond a badge and body kit.

1. A factory-supercharged Ecotec engine

Saturn rated the Red Line’s 2.0-liter, intercooled, supercharged four-cylinder at 205 hp at 5,600 rpm and 200 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. Those are manufacturer figures from Saturn/GM development material published in 2003, not independent road-test measurements. The 2007 brochure mirror describes an Eaton helical Roots supercharger, an air-to-water intercooler, and 12 psi of boost. 2007 Saturn Ion brochure (mirror)

2. A five-speed manual with performance in mind

The Red Line paired its supercharged engine with a close-ratio five-speed manual. Saturn said the transmission had increased torque capacity, and the short-throw shifter was refined during track work. That combination made the driver part of the powertrain experience rather than leaving the engine to work through an automatic. Saturn/GM development account

3. Track work informed the production car

Saturn and GM Performance Division used the Nürburgring and U.S. road courses to develop the Red Line’s powertrain, chassis, and brakes. The development account says an early mule completed more than 100 hard laps on its first outing. That history helps explain why Saturn discussed details such as shifter travel, pedal feel, and suspension tuning—not just engine output. Saturn/GM development account

4. Suspension changes beyond appearance

The Red Line received stiffer springs, a larger stabilizer bar, firmer shock valving, upgraded front struts, and a firmer rear trailing-link bushing. Period Saturn material also says its ride height was lowered by 10 mm. Together, those hardware changes set it apart from an Ion with only cosmetic add-ons, though a firmer setup can trade some ride comfort for tighter body control.

5. Larger four-wheel disc brakes

Saturn’s development description specifies 11.6-inch vented front rotors and 10.6-inch rear discs, heavy-duty calipers, and standard ABS. These are period manufacturer specifications; they describe the hardware, not a current braking comparison against newer cars. Saturn/GM development account

6. Forged wheels and performance tires

Period specifications paired 17-inch forged alloy wheels with 215/45R-17 Dunlop Sport SP9000 performance tires. The tire model and fitment are historical details, not a claim about present-day availability. If choosing replacement tires now, confirm the car’s wheel setup, the correct size, load and speed ratings, and vehicle fitment rather than assuming an old model remains available.

7. Engine hardware and intercooling for the supercharged setup

The 2007 brochure mirror lists a high-capacity intercooler arrangement and strengthened engine components, including a forged-steel crankshaft and connecting rods, plus oil-jet-cooled pistons. These details are specific to that brochure’s model year; they should not automatically be treated as identical specifications for every Red Line year. For service or parts research, match documentation to the car’s model year and supercharged engine. GM’s 2004 owner’s manual distinguishes the 2.0-liter supercharged engine and its five-speed manual from other Ion powertrains. 2007 Saturn Ion brochure (mirror) · 2004 Saturn Ion owner’s manual

8. Recaro front seats with more lateral support

Saturn called out the Red Line’s Recaro front seats for their increased lateral support. That support suited the car’s performance intent by helping occupants stay in place during cornering, rather than treating the interior as an unchanged economy-car cabin.

9. Driver-focused controls and pedal placement

A four-spoke steering wheel and sport pedals added to the Red Line’s cockpit changes. Saturn says track sessions informed pedal placement for heel-toe shifting and revisions to brake-pedal feel. Those details matter most to drivers using the manual transmission actively; they are evidence of a deliberate driving position, not a claim that every driver will prefer the setup.

10. Quad Coupe styling with practical Ion details

Unique front and rear fascias and rocker moldings gave the Red Line a more purposeful look. The car also retained the Ion Quad Coupe’s dual rear access doors and dent-resistant polymer body panels, features described in period launch coverage. The styling therefore added a distinct identity without discarding the Ion’s unusual everyday-access and body-panel characteristics. Cars.com period coverage

What the 2007 brochure’s performance figures mean

The 2007 Saturn brochure mirror lists 0–60 mph in 6.2 seconds, a quarter-mile in 14.7 seconds, 0.85 g on the skid pad, and a 60–0 mph stopping distance of 119 feet, identified as based on GM testing. These are brochure-reported results, not current independent measurements or a promise of what every surviving car will achieve. Vehicle condition, tires, surface, and test conditions can affect real-world results. 2007 Saturn Ion brochure (mirror)

Why it was more than a trim package

The Red Line’s distinction came from the way its parts worked as a package: a supercharged engine and strengthened manual transmission, chassis and brake revisions, performance tires, supportive seats, and track-informed driver controls. Its styling made that intent visible, but the hardware underneath is what made the Ion Red Line a genuine performance variant.
