10 Things Mazda Enthusiasts Know About the Wankel Rotary Engine

From the Cosmo Sport to the Le Mans-winning 787B and the electrified MX-30, these ten facts explain Mazda’s rotary-engine history and how its engines differ.

Mazda’s rotary story runs from the 1967 Cosmo Sport to the 1991 Le Mans-winning 787B and, after a pause in rotary-vehicle production, to the electrified MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV in 2023. The Wankel engine works differently from a piston engine, but it is still an internal-combustion engine—and Mazda’s rotary models do not all share the same configuration or purpose.

1. A Wankel rotary is still an internal-combustion engine

The defining difference is what moves inside it. In a conventional piston engine, combustion drives pistons up and down; the engine then converts that reciprocating motion into rotation. A Wankel rotary has no reciprocating pistons. Combustion pressure acts on a roughly triangular rotor, turning an eccentric shaft.

Mazda’s 2003 engineering review describes the rotor moving within a trochoid-shaped housing. The space between rotor and housing forms working chambers whose volumes change as the rotor turns. It is a different way to convert combustion pressure into rotation, not a different category of power source. Mazda’s rotary-engine technology overview discusses the design.

2. The rotor carries several working chambers through the engine cycle

The familiar four stages—intake, compression, combustion and expansion, and exhaust—still occur. The distinction is that separate chambers perform those stages in different parts of the housing as the rotor moves, rather than one cylinder changing function around a reciprocating piston.

  1. Intake: A chamber grows in volume and draws in the air-fuel mixture.
  2. Compression: As the chamber volume decreases, it compresses the mixture.
  3. Combustion and expansion: Ignition raises pressure, pushing on the rotor and turning the eccentric shaft.
  4. Exhaust: The chamber opens to the exhaust port and expels the spent gases.

The stages are spatially separated around the housing. The rotor’s continuous motion takes each chamber through them in sequence.

3. Mazda committed to the rotary before it had a production rotary car

Mazda says its technical cooperation with NSU and Felix Wankel began in July 1961. The company announced completion of its rotary engine and launched the Cosmo Sport in 1967. That long development effort preceded the model’s debut by years.

The Cosmo Sport—also known as the Mazda 110S—was Mazda’s first rotary-powered vehicle. The company’s later history records more than two million rotary-engine vehicles produced by October 2023, a total Mazda says is based on its in-house calculation. Its Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer Takeshi Mukai called the engine “a special part of Mazda history” and a symbol of the company’s “never-stop challenging spirit.” Mazda’s rotary history provides the company’s timeline and production figure.

4. The Cosmo Sport began a lineage, not a single unchanging engine

Mazda’s rotary-powered road cars evolved across different models and engine generations. The first-generation Savanna RX-7 arrived in 1978. The third-generation RX-7 launched in 1991, the same year Mazda’s 787B won Le Mans. The RX-8 followed in 2003 with the RENESIS.

Those milestones matter, but they do not mean every Mazda rotary was mechanically identical. The 787B’s R26B, for instance, was a purpose-built four-rotor racing engine—not simply a production RX-7 engine with a different label. Mazda says it used the same rotor shape as the production 13B, while its systems and racing specification were distinct.

5. The 787B’s Le Mans win came after years of Mazda entries

In 1991, the Mazda 787B won the 59th 24 Hours of Le Mans, becoming the first Japanese car to take the race’s overall victory. It was Mazda’s 13th attempt, not its first appearance at the event: the company says its first Le Mans entry was in 1970. The 787B weighed 830 kg, according to Mazda’s commemorative history.

The result made the car an enduring symbol of Mazda’s rotary program, but it belongs to endurance racing. Its record does not imply that a road-going rotary shared the 787B’s output, equipment, or race role. Mazda recounts the victory in its 787B and Le Mans history.

6. The R26B was a four-rotor racing engine rated at 700 PS

The naturally aspirated R26B in the 787B used four sequential rotor housings and had a maximum output reported by Mazda as 700 PS. Its racing specification included peripheral-port intake and exhaust, electronically controlled fuel injection, a variable air-intake system, three-plug ignition, and ceramic apex seals.

Calling it “a 13B” because Mazda used the same rotor shape would obscure the important distinction: the R26B was a separate competition engine with its own systems and specification. The 700 PS figure is Mazda’s reported 787B/R26B specification, not a rating for production 13B engines. Mazda’s commemorative technical account lists the R26B details.

7. The rotary’s compactness and smoothness are design advantages, not universal guarantees

Mazda’s 2003 engineering review identifies compactness and low mass among the rotary’s advantages. It also discusses reduced vibration and noise in relation to the absence of intake and exhaust valves. These are design characteristics Mazda describes; they should not be stretched into blanket claims that every rotary is more efficient, cleaner, cheaper to maintain, or more durable than every piston engine.

Those broader comparisons depend on the specific engine, vehicle, operating conditions, and measure being compared. The 2003 review is useful for understanding Mazda’s engineering rationale, not for establishing present-day market comparisons. Mazda’s technical overview explains the design context.

8. RENESIS powered the RX-8, whose production ended in 2012

The RX-8 launched in 2003 with the naturally aspirated RENESIS rotary engine. It was a production road car, distinct in purpose and specification from the four-rotor R26B endurance racer. Mazda ended RX-8 production in June 2012.

That end date marks the close of the RX-8 production chapter; it does not mean Mazda permanently abandoned rotary technology. The company later resumed rotary-vehicle production in an electrified vehicle, with a different role for the engine.

9. Mazda explored hydrogen with a dual-fuel RX-8

Mazda adapted a RENESIS for the RX-8 Hydrogen RE as a dual-fuel engine that could use hydrogen or gasoline. Beginning in 2006, the vehicle was commercially leased in Japan. That was a limited lease program, not general consumer availability.

Mazda says that when the engine burns hydrogen, CO2 emissions are zero and NOx emissions are negligible. Those claims apply to hydrogen operation as Mazda describes it; they should not be read as describing gasoline operation or the vehicle’s full lifecycle emissions. The hydrogen RX-8 was an experiment in fuel use, not the same system or vehicle role as the later MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV. Mazda’s rotary-engine material covers its hydrogen work.

10. The rotary returned in 2023 as part of an electrified MX-30

Mazda says rotary-vehicle production resumed in June 2023 with the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV. This marks a return of rotary production, but it is not an RX-7 revival: it is an electrified vehicle, and the rotary’s role differs from that of a conventional rotary-powered sports car.

The 2023 announcement establishes the production restart and vehicle name. It does not, by itself, support detailed claims about the modern system’s architecture or performance, so those specifics are best left to Mazda’s product documentation. Mazda’s 2023 rotary history records the restart.
