A manageable adventure bike can be a better match than a larger one—but “small” does not mean one fixed engine size, weight or level of off-road ability. This list draws from models compared in 2025 and 2026 coverage, spanning lighter road-biased machines, mid-capacity all-rounders and more dirt-oriented options. It is a candidate list, not a universal ranking: availability, trim and specifications vary by market, so check the current local version before deciding.
What makes an adventure bike “small”?
There is no single global definition. Compact adventure motorcycles range from modest-displacement road tourers to larger-capacity bikes designed to be more approachable than full-size ADV machines. Displacement alone tells you little about whether a bike will feel manageable: kerb or curb weight, seat height, wheel size, chassis setup and where the mass sits all matter.
The examples below come from different markets and source comparisons. Three sets of India-market figures are reported by Autocar India for the versions it compared in 2025; the Suzuki figures come from Motofomo’s August 2026 comparison. They are useful reference points, not interchangeable or timeless specifications. Confirm local trim and measurement conventions with the manufacturer.
10 compact adventure-bike candidates
1. KTM 390 Adventure X
The 390 Adventure X is a road-friendlier option within KTM’s small-ADV family. In Autocar India’s 2025 comparison, the India-market version had a 399 cc engine producing 46 hp at 8,500 rpm and 39 Nm at 6,500 rpm, with a 182 kg kerb weight, 825 mm seat height, 227 mm ground clearance and 14.5 L fuel capacity. That comparison describes its 19-inch front wheel as road-biased and reports a bidirectional quickshifter on the X trim. Autocar also characterized the X as lighter and friendlier than the Himalayan 450 in its review context; that is a reviewer impression, not a guarantee of fit for every rider. Autocar India’s 2025 specifications comparison is specific to its compared versions.

2. BMW G 310 GS
The G 310 GS is the lowest-displacement member of the three-bike India comparison, but it is not automatically the easiest fit: its reported 835 mm seat is taller than the KTM X’s, while its 170 kg kerb weight is lower. Autocar India lists 313 cc, 34 hp at 9,500 rpm, 28 Nm at 7,500 rpm, 220 mm ground clearance and an 11 L tank for its 2025 comparison version. It also uses a 19-inch front wheel, which the comparison groups with the KTM as road-biased. Its equipment was less extensive than the KTM and Himalayan in those compared trims; local versions may differ.
3. Royal Enfield Himalayan 450
The Himalayan 450 shows why “small” is relative: its 452 cc engine and 196 kg kerb weight make it larger and heavier than the BMW and KTM X in Autocar India’s 2025 comparison, yet it remains part of current compact-ADV discussions. The reported India-market figures are 40 hp at 8,000 rpm, 40 Nm at 5,500 rpm, 825–845 mm seat height, 230 mm ground clearance and a 17 L tank. It has the largest front wheel among those three models in the comparison and includes riding modes in the compared trim. Its greater dimensions and heavier feel may be daunting to some riders, as Autocar’s review noted, but rider fit and confidence are personal.
4. KTM 390 Adventure R
The 390 Adventure R appears alongside the X in broader 2026 compact-bike coverage and in Cycle News’ 2025 lightweight ADV comparison. It is a candidate for riders who want to consider the more dirt-oriented side of the 390 Adventure range rather than assume every compact ADV is a road tourer. The material cited here does not establish a directly comparable set of current local specifications for the R, so check the market-specific model sheet before comparing its weight, wheel setup or equipment with the X.

5. CFMOTO 450MT
The 450MT is another mid-capacity option included in Motofomo’s August 2026 candidate pool and Cycle News’ 2025 lightweight ADV comparison. Cycle News frames bikes such as the 450MT and KTM 390 Adventure R around intended riding style and terrain, a useful way to compare them: the right choice depends on how much of your riding is pavement, gravel or rougher trail. The cited comparisons do not provide a fully standardized, locally verified specification set for the 450MT against all the other bikes here.

The CRF300 Rally is the list’s rally-style choice, with Honda’s 2025 regional Adventure & Touring brochure describing a liquid-cooled DOHC four-valve single-cylinder engine and a lightweight chassis. A second Honda brochure result reports 43 Nm at 6,500 rpm, but regional variant and units should be confirmed before relying on that figure. The Rally’s dirt-oriented format makes it a different proposition from road-biased compact tourers; compare its fit and equipment against the riding you actually plan to do, not just its engine size. Honda’s 2025 regional Adventure & Touring brochure is not a substitute for a current local specification sheet.
7. Suzuki V-Strom 250SX
The V-Strom 250SX is a modest-displacement, road-oriented option in Motofomo’s August 2026 comparison. Motofomo reports 249 cc, 19.5 kW / 26.5 PS, 22.2 Nm, 167 kg curb weight, 12 L fuel capacity and an 835 mm seat height. The relatively low reported curb weight does not erase the importance of the tall seat: riders should consider both figures and ideally assess the bike in person. These are secondary-source figures and need checking against the current manufacturer specification for the buyer’s market.

8. BMW F 450 GS
Motofomo’s August 2026 comparison includes the production BMW F 450 GS in its compact-bike pool. It broadens the choices beyond the smaller G 310 GS, but the cited material does not establish a full set of directly comparable figures here. Treat it as a model to investigate in markets where it is offered, and compare the exact version’s weight, seat height, wheel sizes, equipment and price rather than assuming the GS name or engine class determines its character.
9. Kawasaki KLE500
The KLE500 also appears in Motofomo’s August 2026 list of compact adventure motorcycles. Its inclusion signals another option in this category, not proof that it is available in every country or that its specifications match a particular regional version. Verify local availability and the manufacturer’s figures, especially wheel setup, seat height and ready-to-ride weight, before putting it beside established models in a shortlist.

10. Triumph Scrambler 400 XC
Motofomo includes the Scrambler 400 XC among compact adventure-style candidates. A scrambler-inspired machine may suit a rider whose use is mostly road with occasional rough surfaces, but it should not be treated as equivalent to a rally-style motorcycle solely because both can leave the pavement. The cited material does not establish a standardized off-road capability comparison across the ten models, so evaluate its intended use and local specifications directly.

How to choose the right small ADV for your riding
Start with your terrain split
For mostly paved riding and touring, prioritize road comfort, fuel capacity, wind protection and manageable mass at low speed. If gravel roads and trails are a regular part of the plan, pay closer attention to front-wheel size, suspension and chassis orientation, and how easy the bike feels to control when standing or turning slowly. Cycle News’ 2025 comparison of the 450MT and 390 Adventure R likewise frames the choice around riding style and terrain, rather than a single winner.
Check fit, not just the seat-height number
A lower seat can help, but height does not fully describe reach or balance. Compare the seat height with your inseam and riding posture, and consider how the bike carries its mass. The Autocar India figures make the point: the BMW in its comparison weighed less than the KTM X but had a higher seat; the Himalayan was heavier still and offered an adjustable 825–845 mm seat range. Those numbers describe specific India-market trims, not a universal fit verdict.
Use comparable specifications
Before comparing two bikes, make sure the figures refer to the same market, model year and trim. Kerb, curb and ready-to-ride weight may not be reported on the same basis. Check wheel sizes, fuel capacity, suspension orientation and equipment alongside power and torque. A larger tank is not a guaranteed range figure, and horsepower alone does not determine how useful an engine feels at trail speeds.
Factor in ownership support
Price, dealer access, service support and parts availability can change the practical choice substantially by country. The cited material does not establish comparable prices or long-term reliability, so assess those locally rather than inferring them from this candidate list.
Why bigger is not always better
A smaller or more compact motorcycle can reduce the effort involved in parking, low-speed turns and picking a line on unfamiliar surfaces. But there is no universal winner among these ten: the best fit depends on rider stature and experience, the bike’s actual weight and balance, and the proportion of road to trail in its use. A road-focused 250SX, a rally-style CRF300 Rally and a larger Himalayan 450 answer different needs; comparing them as if they were one standardized class obscures the decision that matters.
