Texas offers everything from spring wildflowers and Hill Country backroads to desert mountains and the Rio Grande. These ten route ideas are a curated mix—not an official ranking—and vary widely in length, remoteness and road surface. Choose one that fits your time and vehicle, then check live conditions before you set out.

Hill Country drives

1. New Braunfels to Austin via Bandera, Vanderpool, Kerrville and Fredericksburg

This 250-mile-plus loop strings together rolling countryside, ranch roads and small towns. In spring, wildflowers add color to the route; Travel Texas estimates about 5,000 varieties grow in the Hill Country, though blooms and timing vary. The source author reported taking about four hours with stops and leisurely driving—use that only as one person’s experience, not a dependable trip-time estimate. See Travel Texas’ Hill Country route description before shaping your own itinerary.

2. Willow City Loop and Enchanted Rock

For a shorter Hill Country outing near Fredericksburg, the 13-mile Willow City Loop detours through cliffs, valleys and boulder-and-brush scenery. Spring flowers can make it especially appealing, but neither blooms nor road conditions are guaranteed. Pair the drive with Enchanted Rock if you want to add a hike; confirm current access and park information before going. The official Hill Country itinerary describes the loop as a detour, not a full-day route on its own.

3. Austin to Fredericksburg along the 290 Wine Trail

Travel west from Austin through Johnson City toward Fredericksburg, with the 290 Wine Trail and local heritage and cultural stops as optional pauses. This route works best when the drive is part of the plan rather than a race between tasting rooms. If anyone in your group will be tasting wine, arrange a sober driver. Use the Travel Texas itinerary to identify possible stops and verify opening times directly.

4. Fredericksburg to Luckenbach and the Canyon Lake backroads

Continue from Fredericksburg to Luckenbach, then take backroads around Canyon Lake toward New Braunfels. The route combines small-town character with a change of scenery near the lake; Gruene Hall and other area attractions can extend the day. This overlaps parts of the Austin–Fredericksburg itinerary, but frames the drive around Luckenbach, Canyon Lake and the New Braunfels end of the Hill Country. Attraction hours and seasonal schedules can change, so check ahead using the official itinerary as a starting point.

5. Lost Maples and the Vanderpool countryside

Plan a fall drive through the countryside around Vanderpool and Lost Maples State Natural Area for a chance to see autumn color among the Hill Country’s hills and parkland. Foliage timing changes from year to year, so don’t build a fixed-date trip around a promise of peak color. Check current park information before you leave. Travel Texas’ Hill Country outdoor guide highlights the area’s seasonal natural scenery.

Long drives into West Texas

6. Austin to Marfa

This long westward journey crosses the Hill Country and Fredericksburg on the way to Marfa. The 290 Wine Trail offers a possible stop along the route, and Big Bend can be a further extension for travelers with more time. Because the itinerary spans a large part of the state, decide in advance where to break the drive rather than assuming it fits into a quick outing. Travel Texas outlines the journey in its Austin-to-Marfa road-trip guide.

7. El Paso to Big Bend via Hueco Tanks and Guadalupe Mountains

Travel south and east from El Paso through the stark West Texas landscape, with Hueco Tanks and the approach to Guadalupe Mountains National Park as possible stops. Travel Texas calls the highway approach the “Lonesome Highway”—a fitting reminder that this is a remote drive, not a route with Hill Country-style services at every turn. Hueco Tanks requires a pass, according to the Big Bend road-trip itinerary; verify current entry rules and availability before making it a scheduled stop.

8. Guadalupe Mountains to Fort Davis, Alpine and Marfa

Continue through West Texas from the Guadalupe Mountains toward Fort Davis, Alpine and Marfa. The Davis Mountains and McDonald Observatory are nearby attractions to consider adding, depending on your schedule. This route is a good fit for travelers who want mountain and desert scenery as well as small-town stops, but distances between destinations and services call for more planning than a compact weekend loop. Find the suggested corridor in Travel Texas’ West Texas itinerary.

9. Big Bend National Park and the Rio Grande River Road

The River Road follows the Rio Grande toward Big Bend Ranch State Park, Lajitas and Terlingua, offering a dramatic desert-river setting. This is the route on this list with a specific vehicle requirement: Travel Texas says the River Road is dirt and requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Do not assume a standard rental car is suitable. Check current road and park conditions, and plan for the remoteness before leaving. See Travel Texas’ Big Bend overview and its Big Bend route guide.

A seasonal alternative outside the Hill Country and West Texas

10. Choose a Gulf Coast or East Texas escape

For a coastal trip, link Corpus Christi, Port Aransas and Rockport-Fulton for beaches, waterfront scenery and coastal-town stops. Travel Texas points to Gulf Coast drives as summer options, but weather and attraction schedules can vary. Prefer forest and lake scenery? Make East Texas the focus instead, with the Piney Woods, Big Thicket or Caddo Lake as possible destinations. These are alternatives, not one continuous route; choose a region and build a manageable itinerary around it. Travel Texas’ seasonal road-trip guide offers examples for both areas.

How to choose and plan a Texas road trip

  • Match the route to your time. A short Willow City Loop outing and an Austin-to-Marfa journey call for very different schedules. Don’t infer a reliable drive time where one isn’t provided.
  • Plan for terrain and remoteness. Hill Country loops suit a different kind of trip from the remote West Texas approaches. The River Road’s dirt surface and four-wheel-drive requirement apply specifically to that route.
  • Choose a season for the experience, not a guarantee. Travel Texas describes spring and fall as favorable for outdoor adventures overall, highlights Hill Country wildflowers in spring, and suggests Gulf Coast trips in summer and western landscapes in fall. Those are broad cues, not promises about weather, blooms or opening hours.
  • Check road conditions before departure. Use the Texas Department of Transportation’s DriveTexas website or mobile app for current conditions, closures and construction updates.
  • Verify park and attraction access. Pass requirements, hours and seasonal schedules can affect stops. Confirm current rules with the relevant park or attraction before setting out.
  • Bring a planning aid if useful. Travel Texas offers a Texas travel guide with practical tips and curated itineraries; a printed guide or road atlas can also help with route planning.
