No luxury car can be guaranteed to last a lifetime, but some models have stronger evidence of long-term durability than others. For U.S. shoppers, Lexus and Acura are sensible places to start; model-year-specific repair records, mileage-survival estimates, owner reports, and the condition of the individual car can help narrow the choice.
What “lifetime reliability” evidence can—and can’t—tell you
The available measures answer different questions. iSeeCars estimates the chance a vehicle will reach a mileage threshold; CARFAX compares unexpected-repair likelihood for a defined set of model years and reports how much of a model line remains on the road; J.D. Power counts problems reported by owners after three years. None predicts the fate of a particular used car.
- Long mileage: iSeeCars analyzed more than 395 million cars and estimates mileage survival using average odometer readings by vehicle age and a proprietary model. Its 2026 brand analysis estimates a 14.4% chance of a Lexus reaching 250,000 miles and 9.5% for Acura, compared with 3.4% for luxury brands overall. These are brand-level estimates, not guarantees for a particular model or vehicle. iSeeCars’ 2026 longest-lasting car brands study explains its method.
- Unexpected repairs: CARFAX’s 2026 ranking focuses on average five-year unexpected-repair likelihood for 2019–2023 models. Its separate “still on the road” figures describe each model line since its earliest year in the analysis; they are not equivalent to survival at a specified mileage. CARFAX’s model-by-model ranking gives the figures and year notes.
- Owner-reported problems: J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study covers 184 problem areas in nine categories, based on 33,268 original owners of 2023-model-year vehicles after three years. Its problems-per-100-vehicles measure is lower when owners report fewer problems. The industry average was 204; the premium-vehicle average was 217. J.D. Power’s study announcement describes the results and scope.
These figures are useful for screening, not substitutes for a maintenance-history review, inspection, or recall check. A neglected or damaged example can be a poor buy even when its model line has a strong record.
10 luxury cars with promising long-term evidence
CARFAX’s repair-likelihood percentages below apply to 2019–2023 models and are averages, not the odds that any one vehicle will need a repair. “Still on the road” is CARFAX’s model-line measure since the earliest year shown, not a 20-year survival rate for every model.

These are candidates, not a universal ranking across every generation: the repair percentages cover the stated recent model years, while the road-retention figures span different periods. Compare the exact year and generation you are considering, and use CARFAX’s full ranking for its individual model notes.
How to choose among the candidates
If you want a sedan
Compare the Lexus IS and Acura TLX. The IS has the lower CARFAX repair-likelihood figure in this 2019–2023 comparison, and it was J.D. Power’s top overall model in the 2026 VDS. The TLX has a higher repair-likelihood figure in the same CARFAX comparison and a high model-line road-retention figure. Those measures use different time horizons and should not be treated as a head-to-head forecast for two specific cars.

If you want an SUV
The Acura RDX and Lexus UX lead this list on CARFAX’s recent-model repair-likelihood measure. The Lexus GX, Infiniti QX50, BMW X3, and Porsche Macan offer alternatives across different size and performance needs, but their figures do not establish which is the best fit or least expensive to own. Consider passenger and cargo needs, powertrain, service access, and the exact vehicle’s history alongside reliability evidence.
If you want a performance luxury car
The Porsche Panamera and Macan and BMW 2-Series appear among the candidates, but reliability evidence does not make ownership costs interchangeable. Choose by the specific model year, service history, inspection findings, and your budget for maintenance and repairs rather than assuming every car in a luxury brand behaves alike.

What to check before buying a used example
- Pin down the model year and generation. Reliability can change after a redesign, refresh, or technology update. Use the CARFAX year notes as a starting point, then investigate the specific year and powertrain.
- Review service records. Look for consistent, documented maintenance and investigate gaps, repeated repairs, warning lights, or evidence of hard use. A model-level statistic cannot verify how an individual car was treated.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified technician assess mechanical condition, signs of damage, deferred maintenance, and diagnostic codes before committing.
- Check recalls and warranty status. Confirm open recalls and whether any factory or other applicable warranty remains for that vehicle; terms depend on the car, date, mileage, and coverage.
- Estimate ownership costs. Compare routine service and likely repair costs for the exact vehicle, and consider whether qualified service is convenient where you live. Reliability is only one part of the cost of keeping a luxury car.
Warranty context for new Lexus vehicles
For U.S. Lexus vehicles, Lexus says new vehicles include the first and second scheduled maintenance services and a four-year/50,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty. Hybrid models have a ten-year/150,000-mile hybrid-battery warranty. These terms may depend on vehicle eligibility and current program details, so confirm coverage for the specific vehicle with LexusCare. Warranty coverage is not a prediction of how long a vehicle will last after it expires.

J.D. Power’s 2026 VDS reported 151 problems per 100 Lexus vehicles, 175 for Cadillac, and 182 for Porsche after three years. The study’s industry average was 204 problems per 100 vehicles. These are brand-level results from original owners of 2023-model-year vehicles, not lifetime durability scores or repair-cost comparisons. The VDS also found 281 problems per 100 plug-in hybrids versus 198 for gas vehicles across powertrains; that is a broad category finding, not a verdict on every luxury hybrid.
