The Toyota Sequoia, Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, and GMC Yukon are among the full-size SUVs with useful recent reliability evidence—but the available sources do not verify a definitive list of ten winners. Their findings also measure different things: CARFAX estimates repair likelihood, iSeeCars models the chance of reaching 250,000 miles, and J.D. Power surveys owners about problems after three years. Those results can help narrow a search, but model year, generation, configuration, and the condition of the individual vehicle matter more than a nameplate-wide promise.
What counts as a reliable full-size SUV?
Reliability is not one universal score. A vehicle can have a comparatively low modeled chance of needing a repair over a defined period without having the best odds of reaching very high mileage. Owner-reported problems after three years are a third measure. The sources below use different samples, time horizons, and outcomes, so their figures should be read separately—not combined into a single ranking.
- Repair likelihood: CARFAX’s 2026 ranking estimates the average likelihood of a repair for models from 2019–23, using repair data dating back to 2010.
- Long-term mileage: iSeeCars’s 2026 study estimates the probability that vehicles will reach 250,000 miles from odometer readings at different vehicle ages and a proprietary model.
- Owner-reported dependability: J.D. Power’s Vehicle Dependability Study asks owners about problems after three years.
Each measure answers a different question. None guarantees that a specific used SUV will be trouble-free.
What the evidence says about leading candidates
| Model | Evidence and qualification | Model-year or configuration note |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Sequoia | CARFAX reports 5.8% average repair likelihood for 2019–23 models, versus a 10.9% full-size SUV segment average (2026 ranking). iSeeCars estimates a 42.3% chance of reaching 250,000 miles in its 2026 study. | The 2023 redesign replaced the V8 with a twin-turbo V6 hybrid. CARFAX says the new setup’s long-term reliability effect is not yet known. |
| Ford Expedition | CARFAX reports 9.7% average repair likelihood for 2019–23 models (2026 ranking). | CARFAX’s data shows a dip corresponding with the 2015 move from a V8 to a turbo V6 and the 2018 aluminum-body transition, followed by apparent improvement. Extended Expedition EL/Max versions rate lower than the standard-length model in CARFAX’s data. |
| Chevrolet Tahoe | CARFAX reports 13.4% average repair likelihood for 2019–23 models (2026 ranking). J.D. Power named Tahoe the highest-ranked Large SUV in its 2025 Vehicle Dependability Study, which measures problems reported after three years. | CARFAX says the 2015 redesign negatively affected reliability and that more recent years improved slightly. |
| Nissan Armada | CARFAX describes Armada reliability from 2019 onward as similar to Sequoia’s; this is CARFAX’s characterization, not a guarantee for an individual vehicle. | CARFAX identifies redesigns for model years 2017 and 2025. It also says used Armada prices are significantly lower than Sequoia prices, but actual prices vary by vehicle and market. |
| GMC Yukon | J.D. Power named Yukon the highest-ranked Large SUV in its 2016 Vehicle Dependability Study, with Tahoe second. That study’s three-year dependability framing is not directly comparable to CARFAX’s repair-likelihood figures. | CARFAX identifies redesigns in 2007, 2015, and 2021. Its Yukon XL data is less favorable than its standard Yukon data. |
These are evidence-backed candidates, not a verified ten-model ranking. The matching February 2025 article’s exact selection could not be confirmed, so the remaining five models should not be presented as though its list had been independently checked.

How to use the mileage and repair figures
Repair likelihood is not a prediction for your vehicle
CARFAX’s percentages are modeled averages for 2019–23 models, not a forecast that a particular SUV will or will not need repairs. The Sequoia’s 5.8% figure is below the cited 10.9% segment average; the Expedition’s 9.7% is also below it, while the Tahoe’s 13.4% is above it. These figures are useful for comparing those models within CARFAX’s stated method and period, but do not account for the service history and present condition of the SUV you are considering.
A 250,000-mile estimate is a different outcome
iSeeCars analyzed more than 395 million vehicles for its 2026 longevity study and estimates that a Sequoia has a 42.3% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, compared with 4.8% for SUVs overall. This is a modeled probability derived from odometer patterns at different vehicle ages—not an observed share of Sequoia owners who reached that mileage, and not a guarantee. iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer said, “Reaching 250,000 miles is still far from typical, with the average vehicle having just a 5.4% chance of getting there.”

Why model year and body style matter
A nameplate can span multiple generations, powertrains, and body configurations. A reliability trend for one generation does not automatically apply to the next. CARFAX’s notes illustrate why a buyer should start with the exact model year and version:
- Sequoia: The 2023 redesign brought a twin-turbo V6 hybrid in place of the V8. Long-term reliability effects remain uncertain in CARFAX’s 2026 discussion.
- Expedition: CARFAX associates the 2015 engine change and 2018 body change with a dip in its data, with later improvement. Its extended EL/Max versions fare worse than standard length.
- Tahoe: CARFAX says the 2015 redesign hurt reliability, followed by slight improvement in more recent years.
- Armada: CARFAX marks redesigns in 2017 and 2025, so findings about one generation should not be carried over automatically to the other.
- Yukon: CARFAX identifies redesigns in 2007, 2015, and 2021, and reports less favorable data for Yukon XL than standard Yukon.
“Built in the last decade” also spans materially different model years. Check that a ranking or data point actually covers the year and configuration you are shopping for.

How to compare specific used SUVs
Use model-level reliability evidence to decide which vehicles merit a closer look, then assess each listing on its own merits. Before choosing between candidates, compare:
- Exact year and generation: Identify redesigns and avoid assuming that a strong result for one generation applies to another.
- Engine and drivetrain: Confirm the powertrain and drivetrain fitted to the specific vehicle; changes can coincide with different reliability trends.
- Standard or extended length: Do not treat Expedition EL/Max or Yukon XL as interchangeable with the standard-length models in the cited CARFAX findings.
- Service and ownership history: Review available maintenance records, accident history, and ownership information.
- Current condition: Have the actual vehicle assessed; a model ranking cannot establish its condition.
- Fit for your needs: Compare passenger and cargo space, towing requirements, and used-market price separately from reliability evidence.
For example, a Sequoia’s strong longevity estimate may make it worth considering for a buyer prioritizing high-mileage potential. But someone choosing between an older V8 Sequoia and a 2023 hybrid should recognize that the latter’s long-term reliability is not yet established in CARFAX’s cited discussion. A buyer weighing an Expedition against an extended Expedition Max should likewise keep the configuration-specific CARFAX finding in view.
