Those features give it a distinctive mix of efficiency-focused and trail-oriented capabilities—but they do not establish that it is better than every rival. Jeep says the 4xe is no longer in production, and a major recall affecting certain Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrids makes a VIN-specific safety check essential before buying.
What makes the 2025 Grand Cherokee 4xe distinctive?
The 4xe’s appeal is the combination: it can use electric power for some driving, retain a gasoline engine for longer trips, and offer four-wheel-drive equipment intended for demanding terrain. The figures below are Jeep’s published claims and estimates, not independent test results. For 2025 model information, see Jeep’s Grand Cherokee 4xe page; the current page redirects to the 2026 model, so its surfaced 2025 content should be treated as historical model-year information.
1. Plug-in hybrid flexibility
Jeep describes three powertrain modes: Hybrid, Electric, and eSave. Hybrid combines the turbocharged engine and electric motor; Electric is intended for electric driving; eSave reserves battery energy for later. This gives drivers a way to choose how the available battery power is used, but the benefit depends on how the vehicle is driven and whether it is charged regularly.
2. A manufacturer-estimated 25 miles of electric range
Jeep lists an estimated 25 miles of all-electric range for the 2025 model. That is a manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed distance or independent test result. Temperature, terrain, speed, climate-control use, and driving style can affect actual range. It is most useful to think of the estimate as potential electric driving for shorter trips, not as a promise that every commute can be completed without gasoline.

3. A published 56 MPGe estimate
Jeep lists 56 MPGe as a manufacturer estimate and says actual mileage may vary. MPGe is an efficiency measure for electric energy and gasoline combined; it is not the same as gasoline-only MPG. Whether a plug-in hybrid saves money or fuel depends on charging frequency, electricity and gasoline prices, and how much of the driving uses electric power.
4. Jeep-claimed 470 lb-ft of torque
Jeep states that the 4xe produces 470 lb-ft of torque and calls it best-in-class. The company’s footnote defines the class using Ward’s Small Sport/Utility segmentation and its latest available competitive information. Treat the superlative as Jeep’s claim on that stated basis, not as a comparison independently verified here.

5. Up to 6,000 pounds of listed towing capacity
Jeep lists a maximum towing capacity of 6,000 pounds. That is a manufacturer-listed maximum, not a rating that automatically applies to every vehicle or trailer setup. The specific vehicle’s equipment and payload, the trailer, and applicable towing requirements all matter; confirm the limits for the exact configuration before towing.

6. Modes let drivers choose how to use battery power
Hybrid, Electric, and eSave offer different ways to manage powertrain operation: combined engine-and-motor use, electric-intended driving, or reserving battery energy for later. eSave does not add a second battery or create unlimited electric range; it changes when the available battery energy is used. Actual operation and efficiency still depend on driving conditions and charging.

7. Available four-wheel-drive systems include low range
Jeep describes Quadra-Trac II with a two-speed transfer case and low range, and available Quadra-Drive II with an electronic limited-slip rear differential. These are meaningful hardware details for buyers who need more than an efficiency-focused commuter, but availability varies by model and trim. Check the equipment list for the specific 4xe under consideration rather than assuming every version has the same system.
8. Jeep describes battery protection for water crossings
Jeep says a special water seal allows the vehicle to drive through up to 24 inches of water without damaging the battery. This is a manufacturer claim, not an independent durability finding or a general safety guarantee. It should not be read as advice to attempt a water crossing: water depth and conditions can change, and a published maximum does not establish that a particular crossing is safe.

9. Reinforced underbody housing protects electrified components, Jeep says
Jeep describes reinforced underbody housing intended to protect vital electrified components. That protection is relevant to a plug-in hybrid marketed for off-road use, but the statement is the manufacturer’s description rather than an independent test of durability. Buyers should also check the exact trim’s equipment and use the vehicle within its operating limits.

10. Production has ended, but limited dealer inventory may remain
Jeep’s current 4xe FAQ and owner-support page says the Grand Cherokee 4xe is no longer in production and that limited inventory may remain at select dealers. The Mopar 2025 Grand Cherokee catalog lists model-year trims and engines; it is not evidence of current dealer stock. Check with dealers for the availability and condition of a specific vehicle. Jeep also says any Mopar-certified service center can service a 4xe and directs owners to a VIN or vehicle-dashboard lookup for warranty information; verify any warranty coverage for the vehicle you are considering.

Check recall status by VIN before purchase
On November 4, 2025, NHTSA issued an alert about an expanded recall involving certain Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrids over potential high-voltage battery-cell separator damage that may lead to fire. NHTSA’s alert states that 91,844 Grand Cherokee PHEVs across model years 2022–2026 were potentially involved; that is not a count of affected 2025 vehicles. For unrepaired vehicles covered by the alert, NHTSA instructed owners to park outside, away from structures and other vehicles, and not to charge until repaired. The alert does not mean every 2025 4xe is affected or establish the status of any individual vehicle. Use NHTSA’s recall alert for context, then check the VIN with NHTSA and obtain dealer confirmation of whether any applicable recall repair has been completed before buying or charging a vehicle with uncertain status.
How to compare the 4xe with competing SUVs
The available figures help describe the Jeep, but they are not enough to prove that it beats a named rival. A useful comparison should match model year, trim, market, and equipment, and should examine the factors that matter for your use:
- Electric driving: Compare electric-range estimates on the same basis, and consider whether you can charge at home or work.
- Towing: Match the exact vehicle configuration and account for payload and trailer requirements, rather than comparing maximum figures in isolation.
- Off-road capability: Check which four-wheel-drive system, low-range hardware, and protective equipment are included on the trim being priced.
- Ownership: Confirm actual availability, recall repair status, service access, and warranty coverage for the individual vehicle.
Jeep’s specifications and claims establish what the brand says the 2025 4xe offers; they do not provide matched specifications, transaction prices, or independent tests for named competitors. A direct “best” or “beats” verdict would require that additional evidence.
