The examples below make those distinctions explicit. They are selected documented cases, not a universal top ten, and a smaller count for a complete model does not automatically make it rarer than an uncounted body variant.
How to compare rarity
A useful rarity claim needs a clear counting unit. A prototype count, a production total for a whole model, and the number built in one body style are not interchangeable. This list includes documented Mercedes-Benz cars and variants for which the available sources provide a meaningful build figure or a specific, well-documented status. It is not ranked: the evidence does not establish a comparable census across all Mercedes-Benz history.
- Prototypes: factory-built experimental cars, not series-production models.
- Model or series totals: counts for the named model across its production run, which may include multiple body styles.
- Variants: a subset of a model, such as a Pullman or homologation edition; its count should not be confused with the larger family total.
1. 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé: two prototypes
Mercedes-Benz says it built two 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupés in 1955. They were prototypes developed as closed-body versions for the 1956 season, not production cars, and the model never raced. The car’s rarity is therefore best described as a two-car prototype run—not as a two-unit production model. Mercedes-Benz Group’s 2022 account records the pair and the sale; the Mercedes-Benz Museum’s information says the other original car is displayed at the museum.
On 5 May 2022, one was sold to a private collector at an auction held at the Mercedes-Benz Museum with RM Sotheby’s. Mercedes-Benz reported €135 million; Guinness World Records reported €135.1 million including premium. The figures have different stated bases, so they should not be presented as identical price measures.

2. 190 E 2.5-16 Evolution II: 502 homologation cars
The Evolution II was a road-going homologation model associated with Mercedes-Benz’s DTM competition effort. Mercedes-Benz Media reports 502 produced, a specific count for this edition rather than the broader 190 E family. That makes it a clearly documented low-volume example, but the count alone does not establish a ranking among every rare Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz Media’s 2026 account identifies the model and production figure.
3. Mercedes-Benz 600 W 100: 2,677 cars, including 487 Pullmans
Mercedes-Benz reports 2,677 cars in the 600 W 100 line over a 17-year production run. Of those, 487 were Pullman versions. The Pullman count is a subset, not a separate total to add to the 2,677; it also does not establish counts for every Pullman body configuration. Mercedes-Benz Media’s 2023 account gives both figures.
Rank #2
4. 300 SL Roadster: 1,858 examples
Mercedes-Benz Media reports 1,858 300 SL Roadsters built over seven years. This is the Roadster count, not a combined total for the Coupé and Roadster. The Public Archive records the wider W 198 family across 1954–1963, a timeline that should not be mistaken for the Roadster’s seven-year production period. See the 2023 Mercedes-Benz Media account for the Roadster figure and the Mercedes-Benz Public Archive W 198 record for the family entry.
5. 500 K and 540 K: 761 chassis across two series
Mercedes-Benz gives a combined total of 761 chassis for the 500 K and 540 K series: 342 500 K chassis and 419 540 K chassis. The 500 K series article describes eight body variants and identifies the Special Roadster as a standout. The 761 figure is not a count of Special Roadsters, nor does the 342 total for 500 K establish how many of that body style were made. Mercedes-Benz’s 2024 500 K article provides the series totals and body-variant context; it does not state a Special Roadster-specific production count.

What these counts do—and do not—show
The two Uhlenhaut Coupés are the clearest case here of an exceptionally small build quantity, but they are prototypes. The Evolution II has a stated homologation-edition total, while the 600 and 300 SL Roadster figures count larger production groups. The 500 K/540 K statistic covers two series together, not an individual body variant. These numbers answer different questions; ordering them into a single “rarest” ranking would imply a comparability the published figures do not provide.
