10 Performance SUVs With Sporty Handling in 2025

The Porsche Cayenne GTS is the best choice if sporty handling is your top priority, but it is not the only compelling option. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Veloce emphasizes steering feel, the BMW X3 M50 and Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 bring serious agility to the compact-luxury class, and performance EVs such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and Kia EV6 GT add track-capable chassis tuning to instant electric acceleration.

This is a U.S.-market 2025 model-year buying guide, not a laboratory ranking. The vehicles below are ordered by editorial fit for different kinds of performance-SUV shoppers. Straight-line acceleration is listed separately from handling because a quick 0-to-60-mph time does not automatically mean an SUV is engaging, communicative, or composed through corners.

How these 10 performance SUVs were selected

A sporty SUV needs more than a powerful engine. Steering response, body control, suspension tuning, brake feel, tire compound, drive modes, torque distribution, and the ability to stay composed under hard use all affect how it behaves on a winding road.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The list combines manufacturer-published chassis equipment and output figures with independent road-test impressions where available. Manufacturer acceleration claims and independently measured times are not directly interchangeable. Tires, weather, launch technique, rollout procedures, test surfaces, and instrumentation can all change the result, so the figures below are labeled accordingly.

The group includes both gasoline-powered SUVs and performance EV crossovers. The electric models qualify because their braking calibration, regenerative braking, thermal management, drive modes, torque delivery, and chassis control are central to their performance identity—not simply because they accelerate quickly.

1. Porsche Cayenne GTS: the handling-first choice

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne GTS is the clearest answer for shoppers who want a midsize luxury SUV that responds more like a sports car than a tall family vehicle. Its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 produces 493 horsepower, and Porsche lists a 4.4-second 0-to-60-mph time. Dealer technical material cites 4.2 seconds with the available Sport Chrono equipment, so the quicker number should not be treated as universal for every GTS.

The more important reason it leads this list is its chassis specification. The GTS has adaptive air suspension, Porsche Active Suspension Management, a lowered stance, a sport exhaust, and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus. Together, those systems are aimed at keeping the body controlled, distributing torque effectively, and making the Cayenne feel deliberate when the road turns.

Best for: Buyers who put cornering composure, premium performance, and sports-car responses ahead of price or fuel economy.

Watch for: The GTS is expensive, and acceleration equipment can change the published result. Confirm the exact vehicle’s options before comparing it with another SUV’s standard specification.

2. Alfa Romeo Stelvio Veloce: the steering-feel specialist

The 2025 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Veloce remains one of the most driver-focused luxury crossovers in this group. Its turbocharged engine produces 280 horsepower, and all-wheel drive is standard in the U.S. model listed here. That output is modest beside the high-powered BMWs, AMG, and performance EVs, but the Stelvio’s appeal is its comparatively light-footed character.

Independent reviews have consistently highlighted the Stelvio’s precise steering and engaging chassis. It is the SUV to consider when the sensation of placing the front end accurately into a corner matters more than posting the lowest acceleration number. The Veloce is quick rather than hyper-quick, and its road manners are more important to its identity than its headline horsepower.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: Drivers who prioritize steering feel, agility, and involvement over maximum cabin technology or outright acceleration.

Watch for: The Stelvio is an older design with fewer obvious practical and technology advantages than some newer rivals. Its handling appeal should be weighed against the model’s age and the buyer’s need for the latest interior features.

3. BMW X3 M50 xDrive: the modern compact all-rounder

The 2025 BMW X3 M50 xDrive adds a turbocharged inline-six, 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, all-wheel drive, and M-tuned chassis equipment to the redesigned X3 formula. BMW lists 393 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque, along with a preliminary 4.4-second 0-to-60-mph time.

This is a strong choice for someone who wants a compact luxury SUV that remains easy to use every day but reacts with substantially more urgency than a standard crossover. Its all-wheel-drive system brings all-weather traction, while the M-oriented suspension and calibration give it a more purposeful response to steering and throttle inputs.

BOSCH 5499WS Workshop Engine Air Filter - 98% Efficiency at Capturing Dirt
  • Bosch Workshop Engine Air Filters are constructed with a high number of pleats for robust particle holding capacity
  • 98% filtration efficiency in removing small particles from incoming air to guard against engine wear
  • High velocity cellulose cured media provides minimum air resistance and ensures even pleat distance for optimum efficiency
  • Polyurethane foam seal provides elasticity and sealing performance, while protecting against water and heat intrusion into the air intake system
  • All features combined ensure only the cleanest air for strong engine protection, high-performance, and better fuel efficiency

Best for: Buyers who want modern compact-SUV practicality, polished road manners, strong acceleration, and a performance package that works in varied weather.

Watch for: BMW’s 4.4-second figure is identified as a preliminary manufacturer result. It should be presented as a claim, not as an independently verified test time.

4. Mercedes-AMG GLC 43: high-tech agility in a compact package

The 2025 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 uses a hybrid-assisted 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 416 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes-Benz quotes a 4.7-second 0-to-60-mph time.

Its chassis hardware makes the GLC 43 particularly relevant to a sporty-handling comparison. AMG Ride Control adaptive damping, AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive, active rear-wheel steering, and staggered high-performance summer tires all support quick turn-in and strong corner-exit traction. This is not merely a powerful GLC with an aggressive appearance; the specification is built around agility and control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for: Drivers seeking a compact luxury SUV with sharp responses, strong traction, rear-wheel-steering assistance, and a high-tech AMG cabin.

Watch for: The four-cylinder engine may not feel as special to shoppers who associate AMG with the sound and character of a six- or eight-cylinder engine. The standard summer tires also make seasonal tire planning important.

5. Audi SQ5: a fast and composed daily driver

The 2025 Audi SQ5 is available in standard SUV and Sportback body styles. The redesigned version uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 producing 362 horsepower, standard all-wheel drive, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and standard adaptive air suspension.

Car and Driver reported quicker responses than in the outgoing version and measured 4.3 seconds to 60 mph. The SQ5’s strengths are its speed, quietness, stability, and all-weather composure. It is a persuasive option for buyers who want a performance-oriented daily vehicle without an especially harsh ride.

The important shopping detail is that a 349-horsepower version was also sold concurrently under the 2025 designation. A listing labeled simply 2025 SQ5 may therefore not tell the whole story. Check the body style, production version, engine output, and equipment before comparing vehicles.

Best for: Buyers wanting a quick, quiet, practical, and composed luxury SUV for everyday use.

Watch for: Independent testing found the redesigned SQ5 responsive, but its steering feel was still less communicative than the best rivals. It may be highly capable without delivering the most transparent connection at the wheel.

6. Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport: the comfort-and-sport compromise

The 2025 Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport combines a twin-turbocharged V6 rated at 375 horsepower with standard all-wheel drive. It is not the hard-edged choice in this group. Instead, it targets drivers who want strong acceleration, a premium interior, and controlled ride quality without turning every commute into a suspension workout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One of its notable technologies is electronically controlled suspension with Road Preview. The forward-facing camera can identify road imperfections ahead and help the suspension adjust damping. That feature supports the GV70’s broader mission: retain composure when driven quickly while preserving the comfort expected from a luxury crossover.

Best for: Drivers who want a high-quality cabin, a powerful V6, and a controlled but not excessively harsh ride.

Watch for: Genesis prominently publishes the engine output and suspension technology but does not provide a definitive U.S. 0-to-60 figure in the information used for this guide. There is no reason to invent or imply a verified acceleration time.

7. BMW X5 M60i: V8 power with family-friendly space

The BMW X5 M60i is the choice for shoppers who need more room and refinement than a compact performance SUV can offer. Its 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 produces 523 horsepower, and BMW lists all-wheel drive plus a preliminary 4.2-second 0-to-60-mph time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Independent testing of the closely related 2025 X5 M60i produced a 3.6-second 0-to-60-mph result and described the SUV as flat and performance-oriented through corners. That result demonstrates how different an independent test can be from a manufacturer estimate, but it should not be treated as a guarantee for every X5 M60i. The vehicle’s size and mass remain noticeable, even when its control is impressive in context.

Best for: Families who want five-passenger space, luxury comfort, V8 character, and genuinely rapid acceleration.

Watch for: The X5 M60i is large and heavy. Its handling is remarkable for a spacious V8 SUV, but it does not deliver the same compact, lightweight sensation as the Stelvio or the same handling-first focus as the Cayenne GTS.

8. Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: the most track-oriented EV here

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the most overtly circuit-focused vehicle in this group. Hyundai’s N program gives it performance-oriented regenerative braking, extensive chassis control, configurable driving modes, and thermal-management development intended for repeated high-performance use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Car and Driver recorded a 3.0-second 0-to-60-mph time, quicker than Hyundai’s approximate 3.3-second claim, and recorded an 11.1-second quarter-mile result. Those figures explain its straight-line appeal, but the Ioniq 5 N’s bigger distinction is that it provides an unusually configurable performance experience for an EV crossover. Power delivery, braking regeneration, and chassis behavior are part of the entertainment rather than hidden behind a single maximum-acceleration setting.

Best for: Enthusiasts who want an EV with aggressive regenerative braking, adjustable power delivery, and credible track-day capability.

  • RUGGED CONSTRUCTION: K&N Advantage Plus Air Filters are manufactured with durable, premium materials to last for up to 18,000 miles of use.
  • EXTENDED LIFE 18K: K&N Advantage Plus Air Filter provides 50% longer life compared to standard 12,000-mile filters.
  • SUPERIOR FILTRATION & PROTECTION: K&N uses a premium filter media that provides up to 99% efficiency to protect your engine.
  • REPLACE EVERY 18K Miles: Engine air filter only needs to be replaced every 18,000 Miles under normal highway driving conditions (1.5 years based on the average miles driven per year of 12,000 miles)
  • NO-HASSLE WARRANTY: 1-Year Limited Warranty.

Watch for: Its 221-mile EPA range is materially lower than that of many comfort-oriented electric crossovers. Repeated hard driving can also reduce usable range, especially when the battery and tires are being worked aggressively.

EV shoppers should also plan the charging routine before buying. A properly selected home EV charger can make daily use easier, but charger compatibility, connector requirements, available electrical service, and professional installation all need to be checked for the specific home and vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Kia EV6 GT: dramatic acceleration with a low driving position

The Kia EV6 GT combines dual-motor all-wheel drive with 576 horsepower, high-performance brakes, summer tires, electronically controlled suspension, and selectable GT and Drift modes. Kia cites a 3.4-second 0-to-60-mph time and describes the model as having racing-inspired handling.

Its low driving position and relatively conventional road-car proportions give it a different feel from the taller Ioniq 5 N. The EV6 GT is still an electric crossover, but its combination of traction, brakes, suspension control, and selectable modes makes it more than a straight-line acceleration special.

Best for: Buyers who want supercar-like acceleration, a lower seating position, and a performance EV that feels closer to a conventional road car.

Watch for: U.S. model-year-specific availability and pricing should be confirmed against current dealer inventory. The performance specifications are supported by Kia’s published material, but a particular vehicle’s availability can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As with the Ioniq 5 N and Mustang Mach-E GT, prospective owners should consider a compatible Level 2 charger for an electric SUV and verify the home’s electrical capacity before assuming installation will be straightforward.

10. Ford Mustang Mach-E GT: accessible electric performance

The 2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E GT offers dual-motor electric all-wheel drive, 480 horsepower, and a manufacturer-listed 3.8-second 0-to-60-mph time. Ford’s optional GT Performance Upgrade increases torque to 700 pound-feet and lowers the claimed 0-to-60 time to 3.3 seconds.

Independent testing found the Mach-E GT quick, grippy, and solidly controlled near the limit, particularly when equipped with summer tires. That makes it a useful choice for shoppers who want strong acceleration and practical cargo space without moving to the most specialized or expensive performance EVs.

Best for: Buyers seeking an approachable performance EV crossover with useful cargo space and strong straight-line performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch for: Tire specification can substantially affect the driving experience. Standard all-season tires reduce the handling ceiling compared with the available summer-tire setup, so a serious comparison should identify which tires are fitted to the vehicle being considered.

What matters more than 0-to-60 time?

Acceleration is easy to advertise and easy to compare, but it is only one part of sporty road behavior. A performance SUV that launches hard may still feel vague, nose-heavy, or uncomfortable when the road becomes technical.

  • Steering response and feedback: A quick steering ratio can make an SUV turn in rapidly, but useful feedback helps the driver judge grip and placement. The Stelvio is notable here, while the SQ5’s steering is less communicative than the strongest rivals.
  • Suspension control: Adaptive dampers and air suspension can help an SUV manage body motion without making the ride permanently harsh. The Cayenne GTS, SQ5, GV70, GLC 43, and EV6 GT all use sophisticated suspension strategies, though their calibrations serve different purposes.
  • Tire compound: Summer tires generally offer more dry-road grip than all-season tires, but they are less suitable for cold conditions and may have different replacement costs. The GLC 43’s standard high-performance summer tires and the Mach-E GT’s differing tire setups show why tire equipment belongs in any serious comparison.
  • Brake and regenerative-braking calibration: Performance brakes matter, but EVs also depend on how smoothly and aggressively motor regeneration blends with the friction brakes. The Ioniq 5 N makes this calibration part of its performance identity.
  • Torque distribution: All-wheel drive is not one universal system. The way it distributes torque can affect corner-exit traction, turn-in, and the feeling of control when accelerating out of a bend.
  • Weight and thermal behavior: EVs can be exceptionally quick because their motors deliver torque immediately, but battery mass, tire wear, brake demands, and heat management matter during repeated hard driving. A vehicle that performs one acceleration run brilliantly may behave differently after sustained track use.

Gasoline SUV or performance EV?

Choose gasoline if character, range flexibility, and refueling convenience matter most

The gasoline models offer a range of personalities: the V8 Cayenne GTS and X5 M60i emphasize engine character, the Stelvio emphasizes steering feel, and the X3 M50, GLC 43, SQ5, and GV70 balance performance with daily use. Their acceleration is often less dramatic than that of the quickest EVs, but their power delivery, sound, and refueling routine may better suit some drivers.

Choose an EV if instant response and configurable performance are the priority

The Ioniq 5 N, EV6 GT, and Mach-E GT deliver immediate torque and strong all-wheel-drive traction. The Ioniq 5 N is the most overtly track-oriented, the EV6 GT combines acceleration with a lower road-car feel, and the Mach-E GT offers a more accessible blend of performance and utility. The trade-offs include tire wear, vehicle mass, charging planning, and range loss during repeated hard use.

How to shop these SUVs without making a misleading comparison

  1. Compare the exact trim and body style. A 2025 SQ5 listing may refer to the redesigned 362-hp version or a concurrently sold 349-hp version. The EV6 GT’s inventory and pricing should also be confirmed for the specific U.S. market and model year.
  2. Record whether each acceleration figure is claimed or tested. Do not place a manufacturer claim and an independent test result in one column as though they were produced under identical conditions.
  3. Check the tires on the actual vehicle. Ask whether the SUV has summer or all-season tires, and verify the tire’s size, load rating, speed rating, and seasonal suitability. Before replacing them, compare performance tires by exact vehicle fitment rather than choosing only by price.
  4. Drive the route you actually use. A short test drive should include low-speed steering, uneven pavement, highway transitions, firm braking, and several corners. A vehicle that feels exciting for one launch may not be the best long-distance daily driver.
  5. Ask about drive modes and their limits. Determine which settings change steering, damping, throttle, braking regeneration, torque distribution, or stability-control behavior. Some modes are intended for closed-course use or require appropriate tires and conditions.
  6. Plan EV charging before signing. For the Ioniq 5 N, EV6 GT, or Mach-E GT, verify home electrical capacity, connector compatibility, installation requirements, and expected charging location. A Level 2 charger is useful only when it is compatible with the vehicle and the home’s electrical setup.
  7. Price the complete purchase. Once you have narrowed the list, check current inventory and compare local dealer pricing for the exact configuration. Also estimate your trade-in and compare ownership costs separately from the editorial handling judgment.

For readers ready to move from comparison to purchase, a neutral next step is to check current inventory and compare the exact trim, tire package, options, and dealer pricing rather than relying on a generic model-year listing. After selecting a finalist, tools to estimate your trade-in and compare ownership costs can help establish whether the performance upgrade fits the wider budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which 2025 performance SUV has the sportiest handling?

The Porsche Cayenne GTS is the strongest overall handling choice in this group because of its lowered adaptive air suspension, Porsche Active Suspension Management, and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus. The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Veloce may appeal more to drivers who value steering feel and light-footed agility, while the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the most track-oriented EV.

Is the fastest 0-to-60 SUV automatically the best-handling SUV?

No. Acceleration depends on launch conditions, tires, rollout, weather, and test method. Sporty handling also depends on steering response, suspension control, tire grip, brake feel, torque distribution, and body control.

Which performance EV in this group is best for track driving?

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the most explicitly track-focused. Its N-developed chassis control, performance regenerative braking, configurable drive modes, and thermal-management focus are central to the vehicle. Its 221-mile EPA range is lower than that of many comfort-oriented EV crossovers, and hard driving can reduce usable range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do tires matter so much in a performance SUV comparison?

Summer tires generally provide more dry-road grip than all-season tires, affecting cornering, braking, and acceleration. The Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 uses staggered high-performance summer tires, while the Mach-E GT can have different tire setups, so the actual tire specification should be checked before comparing handling.

What should I verify before buying one of these 2025 SUVs?

Verify the exact trim, body style, engine output, tire type, installed options, current U.S. availability, and whether an acceleration number is a manufacturer claim or an independent test. EV buyers should also confirm home-charging compatibility and electrical-installation requirements.

The Bottom Line

The Porsche Cayenne GTS is the best all-around pick for sporty handling, but the right choice depends on what you want the SUV to do. Choose the Stelvio for steering feel, the X3 M50 or GLC 43 for compact luxury performance, the SQ5 or GV70 for balanced daily use, the X5 M60i for V8 power and space, and the Ioniq 5 N, EV6 GT, or Mach-E GT for different versions of electric performance. Compare the actual tires, trim, and equipment—not just the advertised 0-to-60 number.
