The Mitsubishi Galant is the best-supported reliability pick in this group. RepairPal gives the 2005–2012-era Galant a 4.5/5.0 reliability rating, places it second among 24 midsize cars, and records just 0.1 unscheduled repair visits per year. The Eclipse also has a strong repair record, while the Lancer is a more conditional choice that depends heavily on year, transmission and maintenance.

The remaining nameplates belong on a sensible used-Mitsubishi shortlist, not on a blanket “buy any year” list. Reliability changes with generation, engine, transmission, climate, rust, modifications, recall completion and previous care. For an older Mitsubishi, a documented service history and a professional inspection matter more than a small difference in an aggregate ranking.

The 10-nameplate shortlist

Nameplate and approximate years What the available evidence shows Checks that can change the decision
Galant (2005–2012) RepairPal: 4.5/5.0; second of 24 midsize cars; 0.1 unscheduled repair visits per year. Service records, rust, transmission operation and age-related leaks.
Eclipse (2006–2012) RepairPal: 4.0/5.0; 0.2 unscheduled repair visits per year; 20th of 36 compact cars. Modification history, accident damage, oil consumption and sports-car wear.
Lancer (2008–2017) RepairPal: 3.5/5.0; 0.2 unscheduled repair visits per year; 29th of 36 compact cars. CVT servicing where fitted, clutch wear on manuals, rust and maintenance records.
Outlander (2007–2020) Included in Consumer Reports reliability histories; year-level results vary in availability. Generation, engine, transmission, recall completion and corrosion.
Outlander PHEV (2018–2022) Included in Consumer Reports Mitsubishi coverage; no single all-year score establishes every used example. Battery state of health, charging equipment, software updates and specialist support.
Outlander Sport/RVR (2011–2020) Included in Consumer Reports coverage and RepairPal’s Mitsubishi model set. CVT service, underbody corrosion, suspension wear and accident history.
Mirage (2014–2020) Listed by Consumer Reports; ConsumerAffairs describes annual repair costs as roughly in line with its small-car context. Safety equipment, highway use, neglected fluids and expectations about performance.
Endeavor (2005–2011) Mitsubishi’s 2005 annual report says the Endeavor ranked second in its U.S. J.D. Power Initial Quality Study category. Age-related rubber and electronics, rust, parts supply and drivetrain condition.
i-MiEV (2012–2016) Included in Consumer Reports Mitsubishi reliability coverage. Traction-battery state of health, charging compatibility and replacement economics.
Eclipse Cross (2018–2022) Included in Consumer Reports Mitsubishi coverage; compare individual model years rather than assuming the Eclipse name transfers its record. Turbo-engine maintenance, CVT history, recalls and available survey data for the exact year.

1. Mitsubishi Galant (approximately 2005–2012)

The later Galant is the clearest data-backed sedan choice here. Its RepairPal results put it near the top of the midsize-car field, but an older Galant still needs a hands-on assessment. Look for regular fluid changes, smooth automatic-transmission engagement, working air conditioning and evidence that suspension and cooling-system repairs were completed rather than deferred.

Inspect the rocker panels, subframes, brake lines and suspension mounting points for corrosion, especially in areas that use road salt. A clean, unmodified car with invoices is a safer purchase than a lower-mileage example with gaps in its history.

2. Mitsubishi Eclipse (approximately 2006–2012)

The fourth-generation Eclipse can be dependable when it has been maintained, but it was sold as a sporty coupe and many survivors have been driven accordingly. Condition and modification history are therefore unusually important. Check for aftermarket engine or suspension parts, accident repairs, uneven tire wear and signs of track or hard-launch use.

Verify that the engine is quiet when cold and warm, that the automatic or manual gearbox selects every ratio cleanly, and that oil-level checks are part of the ownership routine. Coupes often have fewer previous owners than commuter sedans, but that does not guarantee gentler use.

3. Mitsubishi Lancer (approximately 2008–2017)

The regular Lancer is a reasonable compact-car candidate, but its middling RepairPal position makes screening essential. Ask for transmission-fluid service documentation on CVT-equipped cars and confirm that the car does not shudder, flare engine speed or hesitate under steady acceleration. Manual versions need a clutch-engagement and dual-mass or flywheel inspection where applicable.

Do not treat the Lancer Evolution as equivalent to an ordinary Lancer. The Evolution’s turbocharged performance hardware, specialist maintenance needs and modification history create a different risk profile. On any Lancer, inspect front subframes, rear suspension and wheel arches for rust before relying on mileage alone.

4. Mitsubishi Outlander (approximately 2007–2020)

“Outlander” covers several generations with different engines, transmissions and electronics, so a nameplate average cannot rank a specific used vehicle. Identify the generation and powertrain first, then compare that exact year with owner-survey data and recall records. Confirm that all recall work has been completed using the vehicle identification number.

Consumer Reports’ 2025 Outlander presentation illustrates why this check matters: its model page includes reliability information and reports one NHTSA recall for that model year. A used 2007–2020 Outlander requires the same VIN-level process, not an assumption based on the newest model’s page.

5. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (approximately 2018–2022)

The plug-in hybrid adds a high-voltage battery, onboard charging hardware and software to the conventional inspection. Request a battery-health report, not merely a statement that the car still displays an electric-range estimate. Confirm that the charging cable is present, the charge port locks and releases normally, and the vehicle accepts both its intended AC charging connection and any locally relevant equipment.

Ask a Mitsubishi dealer or qualified hybrid specialist to verify software updates, isolation faults and stored diagnostic codes. In regions without experienced PHEV technicians, parts and specialist availability can outweigh a favorable general reliability history.

Rank #3
Mitsubishi Galant, Mirage, and Diamante, 1990-00 (Haynes Repair Manuals)
  • 1990 - 2000 Mitsubishi, Galant, Mirage, Diamante Chilton's Total Car Care Manual

6. Mitsubishi Outlander Sport/RVR (approximately 2011–2020)

The smaller Outlander Sport, sold as the RVR in some markets, has a straightforward compact-SUV mission and appears in both Consumer Reports’ Mitsubishi coverage and RepairPal’s model set. Inspect the continuously variable transmission for correct fluid service, smooth takeoff and the absence of whining or judder.

Examine the underside, rear subframe, exhaust and suspension arms for corrosion. Check that four-wheel-drive hardware, if fitted, engages without warning lights and that the vehicle has not been used to tow beyond its design limits. Tire mismatches can also stress an all-wheel-drive system.

7. Mitsubishi Mirage (approximately 2014–2020)

The Mirage’s appeal is simplicity and low purchase cost rather than speed or luxury. Consumer Reports lists it among Mitsubishi’s covered models, and ConsumerAffairs describes its annual repair costs as broadly in line with the small-car context, without establishing a single universal cost for every year.

Before buying, assess whether its modest acceleration, cabin refinement and safety equipment suit the intended roads. Confirm that oil, coolant, brake and CVT services were performed on schedule. A low-mileage Mirage that spent years outside in a wet or salty climate can still have seized brakes, degraded rubber and corrosion.

8. Mitsubishi Endeavor (approximately 2005–2011)

The Endeavor benefits from a favorable historical launch-quality result, but it is now an old SUV. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation’s 2005 annual report states: “In the U.S., the Galant and Endeavor ranked No. 2 in their respective categories in the Initial Quality Study (IQS) conducted by J.D.Power and Associates.” That is an initial-quality result from 2005, not a current long-term reliability score.

Age should dominate the buying decision today. Inspect oil and coolant leaks, timing-related maintenance where applicable, electrical accessories, air-conditioning operation, suspension bushings and structural rust. Confirm that local suppliers can provide body and drivetrain parts before committing to an unusually cheap example.

9. Mitsubishi i-MiEV (approximately 2012–2016)

The i-MiEV is an early battery-electric car, so battery condition matters more than the odometer. Consumer Reports includes it in Mitsubishi reliability coverage, but a surviving example can have very different usable range depending on climate, charging history and storage.

Have the traction battery’s state of health measured and compare the result with the range you actually need. Test every charging mode available in your area, inspect the charge inlet and cables, and price a replacement battery or refurbishment locally. A healthy battery and functioning thermal and electrical systems are prerequisites; cosmetic freshness is secondary.

10. Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (approximately 2018–2022)

The Eclipse Cross shares a name with the earlier coupe but is a turbocharged crossover with different mechanical and electrical systems. Consumer Reports lists it in Mitsubishi coverage, yet the relevant evidence can differ by model year. Compare the exact year, drivetrain and recall status rather than importing the coupe’s reputation.

Look for complete oil-change records using the specified turbo-engine lubricant, smooth CVT behavior and no hesitation under boost. Verify that software campaigns and safety recalls are closed, and inspect the turbocharger plumbing, cooling system and all-wheel-drive components on four-wheel-drive versions.

How the reliability evidence should be read

RepairPal and Consumer Reports measure different things

RepairPal builds its brand and model ratings from a proprietary database of repair invoices and related statistics. Its overall Mitsubishi result is 4.0/5.0, ranking the brand sixth of 32 manufacturers. That helps compare repair frequency and cost patterns, but it does not predict the condition of one neglected car.

Consumer Reports reliability histories come from subscriber questionnaires covering 17 potential trouble spots. A typical model year has roughly 200–400 responses, and its published coverage spans model years 2000–2025 plus some early 2026 vehicles. Those owner-survey results and RepairPal’s invoice-based results are not interchangeable scores; use them as separate signals.

Historical initial quality is not the same as durability

The Endeavor and Galant statement in Mitsubishi’s 2005 annual report concerns J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study. Initial quality records problems early in ownership, whereas a 10- or 15-year-old vehicle’s reliability is dominated by wear, corrosion, maintenance and parts availability. Treat the report as historical context only.

Which Mitsubishi is the best used buy?

  • Best-supported sedan: choose a well-documented Galant after a rust and transmission inspection.
  • Sporty coupe: an unmodified Eclipse with complete records is preferable to a more heavily tuned example.
  • Compact commuter: a regular Lancer can work, but CVT service history is a must; do not substitute an Evolution into this recommendation.
  • Family SUV: compare the exact Outlander or Outlander Sport generation and powertrain, then verify recalls and corrosion.
  • Electrified option: select an Outlander PHEV or i-MiEV only after an independent battery-health and charging inspection.
  • Lowest-cost transportation: the Mirage can make sense if its performance and safety compromises fit your driving, and its fluids and CVT have been maintained.

Used-Mitsubishi inspection checklist

  1. Identify the exact vehicle. Record model year, generation, engine, transmission, drivetrain and market designation (such as RVR versus Outlander Sport).
  2. Pull the VIN history. Check title branding, accident repairs, odometer consistency, open recalls and completed campaigns.
  3. Demand maintenance evidence. Look for dated invoices for engine oil, transmission or CVT fluid, cooling-system work, brakes, spark plugs and—on hybrids or EVs—battery and charging-system checks.
  4. Inspect for corrosion. Put the vehicle on a lift and examine subframes, brake lines, suspension mounts, rocker panels, floor seams and fuel or battery enclosures.
  5. Test from cold. A cold start exposes warning lights, smoke, timing noise, rough idle and delayed transmission engagement that a warmed-up test can hide.
  6. Drive under varied loads. Include stop-and-go traffic, highway speed, firm acceleration, reversing and tight turns. Watch for CVT shudder, wheel-hop, overheating, drivetrain vibration and unexplained noises.
  7. Check electronics and safety systems. Test climate control, windows, locks, cameras, sensors, infotainment, charging equipment and every dashboard warning indicator.
  8. Get a specialist report. Use a Mitsubishi technician for older or modified cars and a qualified hybrid/EV technician for the i-MiEV or Outlander PHEV.

Bottom line

For a conventional used Mitsubishi, start with the Galant, then consider a carefully inspected Eclipse or regular Lancer. Outlander, Outlander Sport, Mirage and Endeavor choices require tighter year-and-condition screening, while the i-MiEV and Outlander PHEV should be purchased only after battery and charging checks. Across all ten, maintenance records, rust condition, recall completion and powertrain behavior are more decisive than a badge-level reliability claim.
