10 Of The Most Reliable Mitsubishi Engines Ever Made, Ranked

The 4G63 ranks first, but the best Mitsubishi engine for you depends on stress, fuel type, timing-system maintenance and the vehicle’s job.

The most reliable Mitsubishi engine overall is the 4G63, followed by the 4G64 and 6G72. That order is an editorial judgment based on production breadth, engine construction, naturally aspirated versus turbocharged stress, heavy-duty use, motorsport validation, parts familiarity and maintenance demands—not an official Mitsubishi failure-rate table.

On an older vehicle, service history can outweigh the badge on the valve cover. A maintained, naturally aspirated engine may outlast a neglected turbo or diesel, and a timing-belt replacement record is often more important than a model’s reputation.

The 10 most reliable Mitsubishi engines, ranked

Rank Engine Typical strength Timing system Main ownership qualification
1 4G63 Best all-round reputation and strongest documented performance record Timing belt Turbo versions demand strict belt, cooling and tuning discipline
2 4G64 Understressed 2.4-liter workhorse Timing belt Naturally aspirated applications are the practical longevity choice
3 6G72 Proven 3.0-liter V6 for cars and SUVs Timing belt Age, access for belt service and cooling condition matter
4 4G15 Simple, widely supported small four-cylinder Timing belt Neglected belt service is the major avoidable risk
5 4D56 Established 2.5-liter Pajero and utility diesel Timing belt Diesel heat, injection, turbo and cooling systems need attention
6 4B11 Strongest modern turbo architecture here Timing chain Aluminum-block turbo applications are sensitive to cooling and tuning
7 6G74 Large-displacement Pajero V6 torque Timing belt Old belts and tensioners can decide ownership costs
8 4M40 Durable-duty diesel successor family Timing chain Injection, turbo and cooling condition remain critical
9 4G69 Mature 2.4-liter four-cylinder Timing belt Good general-purpose candidate without exceptional documented validation
10 4G13 Uncomplicated compact-car engine Timing belt Surviving examples are now dominated by age and neglected maintenance

1. Mitsubishi 4G63

The 2.0-liter 4G63 takes first place because it combines broad recognition with the strongest documented performance evidence in this group. Mitsubishi’s company history records the engine in the Galant VR-4 and the 2003 Lancer Evolution VIII. In that Evolution entry, an intercooled turbo 4G63 used upgraded aluminum pistons and forged-steel connecting rods, and Mitsubishi reports 40.0 kg-m of torque.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That evidence is about a high-performance application, not proof that every 4G63 will be trouble-free. Turbo boost, poor tuning, overheating and missed belt service raise risk sharply. The 4G63 is timing-belt driven, so the belt, tensioner and water pump should be treated as one service job when their history is unknown.

2. Mitsubishi 4G64

The 2.4-liter 4G64 is the sensible longevity pick for buyers who value low specific output and practical torque over maximum performance. Mitsubishi installed it in the Delica and other vehicles, giving the engine a broad working history. Common naturally aspirated versions are less thermally and mechanically stressed than turbocharged performance engines.

It uses a timing belt. Confirm the engine code and market before ordering parts, because belt-kit fitment varies by application and model year.

3. Mitsubishi 6G72

The 3.0-liter 6G72 earned its place through long production use in passenger cars and SUVs, including the Debonair V family recorded in Mitsubishi’s history. Its mature V6 design and wide application base make parts knowledge relatively strong.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 6G72 is also belt-driven. On an older vehicle, access, age-related seals and cooling-system condition can turn routine belt service into a substantial job, so inspection should include the tensioners, water pump and evidence of overheating.

4. Mitsubishi 4G15

The small 4G15 is a strong commuter-engine choice because its design is relatively simple and parts familiarity is widespread across Mitsubishi’s compact-car families. Modest output reduces the stress placed on the rotating assembly in ordinary use.

Mitsubishi classifies the 4G15 as a timing-belt engine. A current belt is not optional preventive maintenance; a broken belt can end an otherwise healthy engine’s service life or cause major internal damage, depending on the specific application.

5. Mitsubishi 4D56

The 2.5-liter 4D56 is Mitsubishi’s established passenger-car turbo diesel, introduced in 1986, with an intercooled Pajero version added in 1988. Its long service in Pajeros and utility vehicles demonstrates that it can handle sustained work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Diesel duty lowers its ranking below the simpler gasoline engines. Heat load, injection-system condition, turbocharger health and cooling performance all matter, as does its timing belt. A 4D56 with documented servicing can be dependable; one with overheating or uncertain belt history is a poor bet regardless of reputation.

6. Mitsubishi 4B11

The 4B11T powered the Lancer Evolution X and is the strongest modern turbo architecture in this ranking. Its technical design includes a semi-closed deck, an integrated ladder frame and four-bolt main caps. Unlike the 4G63, it uses a timing chain.

Those construction features support durability, but an aluminum-block turbo engine is less forgiving of cooling-system neglect, detonation and aggressive modifications. Chain drive removes scheduled belt replacement, not the need to inspect chain tension, guides, oil condition and the rest of the engine.

7. Mitsubishi 6G74

The 6G74 is a large-displacement V6 associated with the Pajero family before the later 6G75. Its relaxed torque suits a heavy SUV and reduces the need to operate the engine constantly at high rpm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mitsubishi lists the 6G74 as timing-belt driven. On an older Pajero, belt age, tensioner noise, oil leaks and cooling-system condition should be checked before treating the engine as a dependable long-term purchase.

8. Mitsubishi 4M40

The 4M40 belongs to the 4M4 diesel family introduced in the second-generation Montero, Pajero and Shogun as a successor to the 4D5 family. Mitsubishi lists it as timing-chain driven, which avoids a routine belt-replacement interval.

That advantage does not make it maintenance-free. Injection equipment, turbocharger wear, chain guides, lubrication and cooling performance determine whether an older 4M40 is a durable workhorse or an expensive restoration project.

9. Mitsubishi 4G69

The 2.4-liter 4G69 is a mature, widely used four-cylinder and a reasonable reliability candidate for ordinary road use. Its lower ranking reflects the absence of the unusually strong motorsport or heavy-duty documentation supporting the engines above it, not a claim that the design is inherently poor.

It is timing-belt driven. Verify replacement history and use the exact engine code when selecting a belt, tensioner and water-pump kit.

10. Mitsubishi 4G13

The 4G13’s modest output and uncomplicated compact-car packaging favor long service in normal commuting. Mitsubishi’s documented engine and parts-era lineups show its long-running use in small cars.

It uses a timing belt. Because most surviving examples are now old, corrosion, neglected cooling systems, oil leaks and unknown belt service are more meaningful buying risks than the engine’s original design reputation.

Which Mitsubishi engines use a timing belt or chain?

Mitsubishi’s official timing-system FAQ identifies the following engines in this ranking as belt-driven: 4G63, 4G64, 6G72, 6G74, 4D56, 4G15 and 4G69. It identifies the 4B11 and 4M40 as chain-driven. Belt or chain is only one ownership factor: a chain can stretch or wear its guides, while a belt has a defined replacement service that should not be skipped.

Is the 4G63 really reliable?

Yes, the 4G63 has the best overall reliability reputation here, especially when discussing a correctly maintained, near-stock engine. Its Galant VR-4 and Lancer Evolution applications provide unusually strong documented performance evidence, and Mitsubishi’s Evolution history specifically describes upgraded pistons and forged-steel connecting rods.

Reliability is application-dependent. A highly boosted, modified or overheated 4G63 is not equivalent to a lightly stressed road engine. Before buying, establish the belt-service date, compression or leak-down condition where appropriate, cooling-system history and whether the calibration and hardware remain compatible.

Which Mitsubishi engine lasts the longest?

There is no defensible universal mileage winner. Mitsubishi’s published pages describe introductions, applications, construction and durability achievements, but they do not provide a controlled comparison of failure rates, average mileage or survival percentages for these ten engines.

For a long-lived daily driver, the best probability usually comes from matching the engine to its job: a naturally aspirated 4G64, 6G72, 4G15, 4G69 or 4G13 in a properly serviced road vehicle; a 4D56 or 4M40 when diesel torque and utility work are required; and a 4G63 or 4B11 when performance is the priority and maintenance and tuning can be documented.

Which engine is best for a Pajero?

The dependable choice depends on the Pajero’s use and condition. The 4D56 is the established 2.5-liter diesel option, while the 6G72 and 6G74 are proven gasoline V6 choices. The 4M40 offers chain drive in later-duty diesel applications, but its injection, turbo and cooling systems still require careful inspection.

  • Choose the 4D56 for familiar 2.5-liter diesel utility, provided belt and cooling records are complete.
  • Choose a 6G72 or 6G74 when smoother gasoline V6 operation and relaxed torque suit your driving.
  • Consider a 4M40 only after checking chain noise, injection performance, turbo condition and cooling-system history.

How to judge reliability when buying a used Mitsubishi engine

  1. Verify the engine code and market. The same family can have different accessories, sensors, emissions equipment and belt or chain parts by year and region.
  2. Demand timing-service evidence. For belt engines, look for the belt, tensioner and water-pump replacement date. If it cannot be proved, budget for the complete service immediately.
  3. Check cooling history. Overheating is especially damaging to turbocharged aluminum-block engines and older diesels.
  4. Assess modifications. Non-stock boost, unknown engine management, oversized turbos and poor wiring can erase the reliability advantage of a strong base engine.
  5. Inspect the vehicle, not just the engine. Rust, unavailable parts, neglected transmissions and corroded cooling hardware can make a theoretically reliable engine impractical to own.

What Mitsubishi’s rally record does—and does not—prove

Mitsubishi’s durability material states: “Since our sensational debut at the Southern Cross Rally, we have achieved seven consecutive wins in the Paris-Dakar Rally.” That record supports the company’s history of developing durable competition and utility vehicles, but it is not a controlled reliability test of these ten civilian engines. Motorsport success should be treated as supporting context, not a promise of a particular service life.

Bottom line for 4G63, 4G64 and 4B11 buyers

Pick the 4G63 for the strongest all-round reputation and performance documentation, the 4G64 for an understated naturally aspirated workhorse, and the 4B11 for modern turbo construction with chain drive. For Pajero and utility use, the 6G72, 6G74, 4D56 and 4M40 remain credible choices when their belt or chain, cooling, injection and turbo systems are verified. The individual engine’s maintenance record is the final ranking factor.
