10 Motorcycles With Low Maintenance Costs: What the List Really Shows

A 2023 article names ten motorcycles as low-maintenance candidates, but does not rank them using comparable costs. Here’s how to assess the examples and compare service expenses fairly.

There is no defensible universal ranking of the 10 cheapest motorcycles to maintain: costs change with model year, mileage, local labor rates, parts access and whether you do the work yourself. The 2023 list behind this title names useful examples, but it does not provide comparable model-by-model annual bills. Treat it as a shortlist of bikes and maintenance factors to investigate—not a verified cost ranking.

What “lowest maintenance cost” should mean

A fair comparison needs the same market, ownership period and riding distance for every motorcycle. It should price scheduled labor and parts using a consistent local rate, and account for oil, filters, tires, valve checks and final-drive care. Routine service should be kept separate from unexpected repairs, fuel, insurance and depreciation.

Reliability and maintenance cost are related, but they are not interchangeable. A motorcycle may have a strong reliability reputation yet require expensive labor or parts when service is due. The 2023 SlashGear article refers to reliability surveys but does not provide a current, reproducible comparison of maintenance bills for its named models. SlashGear’s article therefore supports a discussion of candidates and service considerations, not a ranked cost table.

10 motorcycles named in the 2023 article—and what to check

These are examples discussed by SlashGear, not ten models proven to have the lowest costs on a common basis. The article also discusses the Victory Cross Country, BMW R nine T Pure and BMW G310 GS, but does not provide comparable annual cost figures for them.

  1. Royal Enfield Classic 350

The 2023 article describes a 349cc fuel-injected, two-valve single and presents it as a low-cost, low-maintenance option. Its price, warranty and performance statements reflect publication-era market conditions; confirm the applicable model year, market and service schedule before using them to estimate current ownership costs.

  2. Indian Scout Bobber Sixty

SlashGear says the oil-change interval is 10,000 miles. That is a claim from a 2023 secondary article, not a universal interval for every year and market. Check the owner’s manual for the specific motorcycle before planning service.

  3. Ducati Monster

The article highlights desmodromic valve adjustment at 7,500 miles as a potentially costly dealer service and a technically demanding home job. This is a useful reminder that labor complexity can outweigh a long interval; confirm the schedule for the exact Monster model year.

  4. Triumph Bonneville T120

The article reports service every 10,000 miles or annually. Verify that interval against the handbook for the motorcycle’s year and market. Model names matter, too: Triumph renamed the former Street Twin 900 as the Speed Twin 900 in 2022.

  5. Kawasaki Ninja 650

SlashGear describes a schedule around 7,500 miles after the first year and identifies routine oil changes and chain care as accessible DIY work. Confirm the model-year schedule and follow the manual’s procedures; chain work and other maintenance still require appropriate tools and safe practice.

  6. Suzuki SV650

The article points to used 2003–2009 examples and discusses newer models as affordable at the time of publication. For a used SV650, condition, generation and documented maintenance history matter more than a general reputation or an old purchase-price comparison.

  7. Harley-Davidson Sportster

The article notes that belt drive on 883 models avoids routine chain lubrication and adjustment, and that parts and independent-shop access can be advantages in the United States. Those factors alone do not establish a lower total service bill; compare the specific model’s schedule, parts and local labor.

  8. Honda Rebel 250

SlashGear gives a 4,000-mile oil-change interval. The Rebel 250 is a historical model in many markets, so treat it as a used-bike example unless a current local listing confirms otherwise. Check the relevant manual and the condition of the individual bike.

  9. Yamaha FZ6

The article identifies the FZ6 as a 2004–2009 motorcycle and emphasizes that reliability in a used example depends on prior maintenance. It is not a current new-model recommendation; review service records and have an unfamiliar used motorcycle inspected.

  10. How to interpret the ten examples

The list mixes different styles, model years and ownership situations. It is most useful as a prompt to compare service intervals, labor complexity, final-drive type and parts access—not as evidence that one of these bikes will cost less to maintain than another in your area.

Why published cost figures do not make a US ranking

The title’s source does not publish comparable dollar totals for each motorcycle. Other available figures are tied to different countries and methods. For example, HDFC ERGO’s 2025 India guide estimates annual maintenance of ₹900–₹1,300 for the Hero Splendor Plus, ₹1,000–₹1,500 for the Hero HF Deluxe, and ₹800–₹1,200 each for the Bajaj CT 110X and Platina 110; it gives service intervals of 3,000–5,000 km for those models. These are insurer-published estimates, not audited bills, and they describe Indian commuter bikes—not costs that can be converted into a US-dollar comparison of the motorcycles above. See HDFC ERGO’s India guide.

A 2026 India-oriented list likewise names commuter motorcycles and frames upkeep around fuel, servicing, parts and mechanic availability. Its geography and broader ownership-cost framing differ from a maintenance-only comparison of US-market motorcycles. BikeProMech’s list is not a basis for ranking the models in this article.

The Moto Ref illustrates a more comparable method: it pairs service-book intervals with its own workshop rates and estimates costs per 10,000 km. Its page lists examples of about €155 for the Triumph Speed 400, €250 for the Kawasaki Ninja 500 and €200 for the Honda CB1000 Hornet SP. Those figures use its published rate assumptions and European context; they are not US estimates or a ranking of the motorcycles named above. The Moto Ref comparison page shows why distance and labor assumptions need to be stated alongside any service-cost figure.

How to compare two motorcycles before buying

  1. Choose a specific year and market

Get the owner’s manual or service schedule for the exact model year and country. A model name alone may cover different intervals, parts and specifications.

  2. Set a realistic mileage and ownership period

Estimate how far you will ride each year and compare the same time or distance for both bikes. Include annual service requirements where the manual specifies them, even if mileage is low.

  3. Price the work locally

Ask a dealer or qualified independent shop for labor and parts estimates for the scheduled services you expect to reach. Compare like with like: the same region, shop-rate basis and dealer-versus-independent assumption.

  4. Include major service and consumables

Check when valve work is due and what it involves. Add oil, filters, tires, brake consumables and final-drive care. A chain-driven bike needs chain inspection, adjustment and lubrication; a belt or shaft drive changes the routine tasks, but does not by itself prove lower total ownership cost.

  5. Separate scheduled work from repairs

Keep routine service estimates distinct from possible repairs. Reliability information can help assess risk, but it is not a substitute for a maintenance-cost estimate or an inspection of a used motorcycle.

  6. Check parts and mechanic access

Ask whether parts are readily available and whether nearby shops have experience with the bike. A modest service schedule can still be inconvenient or costly if specialized parts or qualified labor are hard to find.

Basic upkeep still depends on the manual

Follow the motorcycle’s own service schedule and specifications. Regular checks commonly include oil, tire pressure, air filter and brakes; chain condition and lubrication apply to chain-driven motorcycles. Do not assume one oil, filter or interval fits every model. For a used bike, service records help show whether previous owners completed the work the schedule calls for.
