A six-cylinder engine is not automatically more reliable than a modern four-cylinder turbo, but it can offer a useful advantage: several of the SUVs below pair a naturally aspirated V6 with a proven automatic transmission and a powertrain that was not completely redesigned for 2024.
This list focuses on U.S.-market 2024 SUVs with a V6 or inline-six engine. The ranking combines 2024 Consumer Reports reliability information, J.D. Power owner-study results, model history, powertrain maturity, and known recall considerations. It is not a guarantee that every vehicle will be trouble-free. Before buying, run the VIN through the NHTSA recall database, inspect the service history, and confirm which engine is installed.
How the most reliable six-cylinder SUVs were selected
Reliability data for a brand-new 2024 vehicle is necessarily incomplete. J.D. Power’s 2024 Vehicle Dependability Study measures problems reported by owners of three-year-old vehicles, so it is more useful for identifying model-history trends than for predicting the exact long-term performance of a new 2024 SUV. Consumer Reports’ predicted-reliability information and owner reports add newer model-specific evidence.
Mechanical simplicity also matters here. A mature naturally aspirated V6 is not guaranteed to outlast a turbocharged inline-six, but it generally has fewer high-heat forced-induction components. Conversely, a proven turbocharged engine can still be dependable when the manufacturer has refined it over several years.

1. Toyota 4Runner
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner is the clearest choice for buyers who value an established mechanical package above fuel economy, acceleration, or cabin technology. Its 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V6 produces 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque and drives through a five-speed automatic transmission.
The important reliability detail is what Toyota did not change. The 2024 4Runner retained a long-running V6, conventional automatic, and body-on-frame architecture instead of introducing an unproven engine or transmission. It also ranked among the top three models in the midsize-SUV category in J.D. Power’s 2024 Vehicle Dependability Study, while Consumer Reports identifies reliability as one of its strengths.
The compromises are substantial. The 4Runner is slow by modern SUV standards, its five-speed automatic feels dated, and fuel economy is poor. It is a reliability-oriented recommendation, not the best choice for refinement or daily commuting efficiency.
2. Kia Telluride
The Kia Telluride uses a 3.8-liter direct-injected V6 making 291 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic. It earned an 85 overall score and ranked first in J.D. Power’s 2024 upper-midsize-SUV comparison.
Its V6 and transmission carried over without a major 2024 redesign, which helps its case. The Telluride also offers a quiet cabin, comfortable seating, and useful three-row space without relying on a newer turbocharged powertrain.
There is a reason to perform more due diligence than the ranking might suggest. Consumer Reports owner reports for the 2024 model include engine-cooling, oil-cooler, EVAP, seat-motor, and other reported problems. Check for open recalls, verify that warranty repairs were completed, and look for regular oil changes before treating a used Telluride as a safe bet.
3. Hyundai Palisade
The mechanically related Hyundai Palisade also uses a 291-hp 3.8-liter naturally aspirated V6 and an eight-speed automatic. J.D. Power placed it third among upper-midsize SUVs in its 2024 comparison, with an overall score of 83.

- ABS / Airbag codes NOT Supported - It is able to read and clear check engine information which is part of OBDII system, but it cannot work with non-OBDII systems, including ABS / Airbag / Oil Service Light, etc.
Its established V6 is a positive factor, and the Palisade is one of the more comfortable and feature-rich three-row SUVs in this group. It is particularly appealing to buyers who want a polished family vehicle rather than off-road hardware.
Recommended Free Tools
Because the Palisade shares much of its underlying powertrain architecture with the Telluride, its ranking should not be interpreted as proof of flawless long-term ownership. Recall completion and maintenance history matter more than the Hyundai badge alone.
4. Honda Passport
The two-row Honda Passport carries a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 rated at 280 horsepower. A nine-speed automatic sends power to standard all-wheel drive.
The Passport benefits from an established engine and transmission combination and avoided the kind of major powertrain change that can make first-year reliability difficult to judge. Its two-row layout also means fewer seats, motors, and third-row mechanisms than a three-row family SUV.
One recall deserves specific attention: certain 2023–2024 Passports were included in a fuel-filler-tube recall because a leak could create a fire risk. Use the VIN, not the model year alone, to determine whether the repair applies and whether it has been completed.

The 2024 Nissan Pathfinder uses a 3.5-liter V6 producing 284 horsepower in most trims and 295 horsepower in the Rock Creek version. Unlike the previous-generation Pathfinder, the post-2022 model uses a conventional nine-speed automatic instead of a continuously variable transmission.
That transmission change is central to the Pathfinder’s appeal for buyers specifically seeking a six-cylinder SUV. J.D. Power gave the 2024 model an 81 out of 100 Quality & Reliability score and an 82 overall score.

This automotive diagnostic scanner is designed for wide vehicle coverage; please check compatibility with your vehicle before purchase
The Rock Creek trim needs separate consideration. It uses the higher-output V6, requires premium fuel, and returns lower fuel economy than standard versions. For the simplest ownership proposition, the standard powertrain is the more sensible choice.
6. Honda Pilot
The 2024 Honda Pilot has a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 285 horsepower and paired with a 10-speed automatic. It received an 83 overall score in J.D. Power’s upper-midsize-SUV comparison.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The naturally aspirated engine gives the Pilot a conventional alternative to the turbocharged powertrains used by some competitors. It is also a capable, spacious three-row SUV with available all-wheel drive.
However, the Pilot should not be presented as an unquestioned reliability leader. Consumer Reports currently rates the 2024 model around average and lists six NHTSA recalls. Owner reports identify in-car electronics and engine-electrical issues among the reported trouble areas. A new or used Pilot deserves a careful inspection and a recall search.
7. BMW X5 xDrive40i
The X5 xDrive40i uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. For 2024, the engine produces 375 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque.
The X5 appeared among the top three upper-midsize premium SUVs in J.D. Power’s 2024 dependability study, making it one of the stronger choices in the luxury category. Its inline-six is smooth, powerful, and well suited to the SUV’s weight.

8. Cadillac XT6
The Cadillac XT6 is available with a 3.6-liter V6, although some versions use a turbocharged four-cylinder. The V6 makes this list; not every 2024 XT6 qualifies.
The V6 configuration uses a conventional gasoline engine and nine-speed automatic. The XT6 also received a J.D. Power quality award for its segment in the 2024 ratings material.
Check the window sticker, VIN, or build information before buying. Consumer Reports owner reports for the 2024 XT6 include transmission-computer problems, so a test drive should include checking for warning lights, delayed engagement, harsh shifts, and infotainment or driver-assistance faults.

9. Infiniti QX60
The 2024 Infiniti QX60 uses a 295-hp 3.5-liter V6 and a nine-speed automatic. Its conventional powertrain makes it an alternative to the Acura MDX for shoppers who want a three-row luxury SUV without a turbocharged four-cylinder.
Consumer Reports currently rates the QX60 around average for reliability. That is a reasonable result, but it does not support calling the QX60 class-leading. Consumer Reports also lists three NHTSA recalls for the 2024 model.
This is a sensible choice only after comparing dealer service costs, warranty coverage, and the individual vehicle’s records. An average reliability forecast can still produce a good ownership experience when the vehicle is maintained properly.

Configuration matters. The 2024 Cayenne S switched from a turbocharged V6 to a 4.0-liter V8, so it is not the six-cylinder version covered here. Confirm the trim and engine rather than assuming every Cayenne has the same powertrain.
The Cayenne can be dependable while still being expensive to own. Scheduled maintenance, specialized repairs, performance tires, and brake work can cost considerably more than on a mainstream SUV. It is best suited to buyers who want its driving ability and have a budget for Porsche-level upkeep.
Six-cylinder SUVs that deserve extra caution
Several popular SUVs have six-cylinder engines but should not automatically be labeled among the most reliable 2024 choices:
- Mazda CX-90: Its 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six is new for the model, and Consumer Reports currently rates the 2024 CX-90 much less reliable than other vehicles from the same year, with 11 listed recalls.
- Acura MDX: It offers a 3.5-liter V6, but Consumer Reports rates the 2024 model below average relative to other 2024 vehicles and lists two recalls.
- Jeep Grand Cherokee: Its 3.6-liter V6 is familiar, but Consumer Reports rates the 2024 model less reliable than other vehicles from the same year and lists 15 recalls.
- Toyota Sequoia: Its 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 is part of a 437-hp i-FORCE MAX hybrid system. That is a newer, more complex powertrain than the 4Runner’s naturally aspirated V6.
- Mazda CX-90 Plug-in Hybrid: It does not qualify as a six-cylinder SUV because its plug-in-hybrid version uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine.
How to check a 2024 SUV before buying
- Verify the engine. The Cadillac XT6 and several other SUVs are sold with more than one engine. Check the VIN or original window sticker.
- Search for recalls. Visit NHTSA.gov/recalls and the manufacturer’s owner portal. A recall listed as “open” should be repaired before purchase when possible.
- Request service records. Look for regular oil changes, transmission service where specified, cooling-system repairs, and documented software updates.
- Scan the electronics. Warning lights, intermittent cameras, failed driver-assistance features, and infotainment glitches can become expensive even when the engine is healthy.
- Get an independent inspection. A pre-purchase inspection can identify leaks, accident damage, worn suspension components, tire mismatch on all-wheel-drive models, and signs of neglected maintenance.
- Price ownership, not just purchase. Obtain insurance and repair estimates. A dependable BMW or Porsche can still cost far more to maintain than a dependable Honda or Toyota.
FAQ
What is the most reliable six-cylinder SUV for 2024?
The Toyota 4Runner is the strongest overall choice when long-established mechanical design is the priority. Its 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V6, five-speed automatic, and body-on-frame platform have been used for years, and the model performed well in J.D. Power’s dependability study. It sacrifices fuel economy, acceleration, and modern refinement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAre V6 SUVs more reliable than turbocharged SUVs?
Not automatically. A mature naturally aspirated V6 may have fewer forced-induction components, but reliability depends on the complete powertrain, software, transmission, cooling system, and maintenance history. The BMW X5’s turbocharged inline-six, for example, has strong dependability evidence but higher repair costs.
Which six-cylinder SUV is best for a family?
The Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade are among the best family-oriented choices because they combine a mature 3.8-liter V6 with three-row seating, comfort, and useful features. The Honda Pilot and Nissan Pathfinder are also credible alternatives. Check recalls and service records before buying.
Which six-cylinder SUV should I avoid?
No model should be rejected solely because of a reliability ranking, but the 2024 Mazda CX-90 deserves caution because it is a new model with a less favorable early reliability forecast and multiple recalls. The 2024 Acura MDX and Jeep Grand Cherokee also should not be assumed to be reliability leaders without checking current data and the specific vehicle’s records.
The Bottom Line
The Toyota 4Runner is the safest reliability-first pick because its V6 and transmission are exceptionally well established. For a modern three-row family SUV, the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade offer the strongest combination of initial reliability evidence, comfort, and practicality. The Honda Passport, Nissan Pathfinder, and Honda Pilot are sensible mainstream alternatives.
The BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne can be dependable premium choices, while the Cadillac XT6 and Infiniti QX60 are reasonable but less convincing than the leading mainstream options. In every case, confirm the engine, check open recalls, and budget for the vehicle’s actual maintenance costs.
