There is no objective ranking of Japan’s most legendary tuning shops. This guide compares five influential names using the evidence available: company history, motorsport or development work, marque focus, and parts or complete-car offerings.

Five Japanese tuning names and what the sources establish
HKS: turbocharger and control-system development
HKS’s official history dates the company’s establishment to October 1973 and says it introduced a turbocharger kit in July 1974. The company also describes subsequent engine, turbocharger and electronic-control development, including its EVC and F-CON product families. These are company-reported milestones, not an independent measure of its standing against other tuners.

HKS describes itself as central to tuning history in its own corporate copy. Treat that as the company’s characterization rather than a neutral consensus. Its documented turbocharger and control-system work makes it a relevant name for readers researching Japanese aftermarket performance parts.
Spoon Sports: Honda parts shaped by racing
Spoon’s official history says it began developing performance parts for the Civic Si and CR-X Si in 1985, with the aim of connecting race cars and road cars. It dates the opening of its speed shop to January 1988 and describes circuit testing as feedback for road-car parts.
That history supports presenting Spoon as a Honda-centered example of a race-to-road approach. It does not, on its own, establish claims about particular models’ lap times, records or dominance.

NISMO says its history as Nissan’s motorsports-focused company began in September 1984. Its company history describes motorsports activity as well as original road cars and customization parts.

TRUST / GReddy: performance products and custom work
TRUST dates its beginnings to 1977, saying a group of racing enthusiasts redesigned and made exhaust parts for their own use. Its account links later racing activity and speed trials with the growth of the TRUST/GReddy name. Current official material lists turbocharger kits and other performance products; GReddy Factory describes custom exhaust, drift-car and complete-car work.

Use the names carefully: TRUST is the company name in its history, while GReddy is the name familiar to many international customers. The company’s own account supports its product and development background; it does not make every part compatible with every car.
Top Secret: a speed-trial profile
Top Secret’s official company page says it has entered 0–400 km/h, 0–300 km/h, 0–1000 m and top-speed challenges since 1994. That supports a speed-trial profile, but not additional claims about records, specific vehicles or results unless separately verified.
