The biggest divide is between the pre-2021 Model S and the redesigned version Tesla introduced in 2021; Tesla then made another round of changes in 2025. The newer cars bring updated powertrain and chassis engineering, cabin and suspension refinements, and—in Plaid—specific aerodynamic and drive-unit upgrades. “Old” and “new” are broad categories, though: equipment can vary by trim, market, options and build date, so check the exact car rather than relying on its model year alone.
What “old” and “new” mean for the Model S
Tesla describes 2021 as a redesign, with a new powertrain, new chassis and redesigned exterior and interior. Its June 12, 2025 announcement, updated January 22, 2026, describes further refinements to the existing Model S rather than a wholly new generation. Those dates are useful landmarks, not guarantees that every car built in a given calendar year has identical equipment.
The differences below compare earlier Model S cars with the 2025-updated version where Tesla has identified a change. Tesla’s statements establish what the manufacturer says it changed; they do not, by themselves, establish a measured improvement in road performance, comfort or efficiency.
10 major differences
1. The 2021 redesign was a larger change than the 2025 update
Tesla says the 2021 redesign brought a new powertrain and chassis as well as redesigned exterior and interior. The changes announced in 2025 are a later refinement to the Model S. That distinction matters when comparing a 2012–2020 car with a recent one: it is a comparison across a redesign, not just a routine update. Tesla’s June 12, 2025 announcement, updated January 22, 2026, is the source for its account of both the 2021 redesign and 2025 changes.

- You can pull back the car, then it can move forwards with Lights and Sound
- Very suitable as children 4 years and up toys for birthday,Christmas gift, new year. Also it can be a gift for your boyfriend
2. Tesla says the newer cabin has more noise insulation
For the 2025 refresh, Tesla lists greater wind- and road-noise insulation, improved active noise cancelling, new insulation materials and sound-absorbent interior materials. These are manufacturer-described changes, not an independent noise test: no decibel figures or matched old-versus-new measurements are established here.
3. The 2025 suspension was revised and retuned
Tesla lists new comfort-oriented suspension components and a revised, retuned air suspension. This identifies hardware and tuning changes, but it does not quantify ride comfort or prove how much different a particular car feels. Suspension equipment and condition should be verified on the specific vehicle.

4. Newer cars add visibility and lighting equipment
Tesla lists a front fascia camera, a blind-spot indicator and adaptive headlights among the 2025 convenience features. The announcement does not fully establish availability across every country, trim or build date, so confirm the equipment on the car itself rather than assuming that every 2025 Model S has every listed feature.
5. Wheel and tire choices are part of the efficiency story
Tesla lists 19-inch and 21-inch Model S wheel designs, low-resistance tires and more aerodynamic wheel designs as part of its efficiency work. Wheel and tire selection can affect efficiency and ride, but the available figures do not establish a configuration-specific range penalty. Check the fitted wheel size and tire specification when comparing cars.

6. The cabin adds dynamic ambient lighting and a new interface
Tesla identifies dynamic ambient lighting and a new user interface as 2025 changes. The source does not provide a complete year-by-year inventory of screen sizes, processors or controls, so it would be misleading to infer a precise display or hardware chronology from this update announcement alone. Verify interface and equipment on the individual car.
7. Tesla claims more range, but the evidence here does not quantify the gain
Tesla says the 2025 refresh increases range and improves consistency in hot and cold climates. The available material does not provide a matched range comparison using the same rating cycle, trim, wheels and conditions, so it cannot establish how large the gain is—or how it compares across configurations. For a purchase decision, use the official range rating for the exact vehicle and market, and compare like with like.

8. Plaid gets its own aerodynamic hardware
For Model S Plaid, Tesla lists a new front fascia, front splitter, rear fascia, carbon-fiber spoiler and updated diffuser. Tesla describes the splitter and spoiler as helping high-speed stability. These are Plaid-specific updates; do not assume that the standard Model S has the same hardware or that a manufacturer-stated purpose is an independent performance measurement.
9. Plaid also receives drive-unit and stabilization updates
Tesla says the refresh includes drive-unit improvements with refined carbon-wrapped rotors and new stabilization components for high-speed handling. These details apply to the Plaid-oriented upgrades, not automatically to every Model S trim. A Plaid-versus-Long Range comparison therefore mixes trim differences with generation or refresh differences.

10. The published dimensions are close, but cargo figures are not directly equivalent
Tesla’s manuals show modest differences in listed exterior dimensions between 2012–2020 cars and the current Model S. The cargo descriptions use different definitions, however, so the listed volumes should not be treated as a precise like-for-like change.
| Specification | 2012–2020 Model S | Current Model S |
|---|---|---|
| Overall length | 196 in — Tesla, 2012–2020 Model S Owner’s Manual | 197.7 in; 198.7 in for Plaid — Tesla, current Model S Owner’s Manual, accessed October 7, 2026 |
| Width, excluding mirrors | 77.3 in — Tesla, 2012–2020 Model S Owner’s Manual | 78.2 in — Tesla, current Model S Owner’s Manual, accessed October 7, 2026 |
| Cargo volume | 28.4 cu ft with rear seats not folded — Tesla, 2012–2020 Model S Owner’s Manual | 28.2 cu ft maximum total cargo with driver and four passengers — Tesla, current Model S Owner’s Manual, accessed October 7, 2026 |
How to make a fair old-versus-new comparison
Start with the exact vehicle, not the broad labels. A used-car listing’s model year alone may not identify every production change or option, and a Plaid should not be treated as directly comparable to a Long Range when the question is what changed between generations.
- Record the model year and build date, then verify equipment on the actual car.
- Compare the same trim and drive configuration; separate Plaid-specific changes from changes shared across the lineup.
- Use official range ratings for the same market and test cycle, and account for wheel and tire configuration.
- Check the actual suspension, lighting, camera and cabin-interface equipment rather than assuming availability from a headline year.
- For cargo, compare how each measurement is defined, not just the number.
- For a used example, include condition and warranty status in the comparison; published generation changes do not describe an individual car’s wear or maintenance history.
Charging is a separate ownership question
Tesla’s 2012–2020 Model S Service Manual identifies a Mobile Connector, an optional Wall Connector and Superchargers as charging options for that manual’s vehicles. It also notes that charging time depends on the power supply, ambient temperature and battery temperature. That older manual does not establish present-day compatibility or regional connector details for every Model S; check the vehicle, location and currently supported equipment before choosing a charging setup.
