10 Maintenance Mistakes That Can Undermine Your Car’s Reliability

Skipped maintenance, incorrect fluids and overlooked warning signs can undermine reliability. Learn what to check and why your owner’s manual should guide the schedule.

Skipped services, incorrect fluids, neglected tires and ignored warning signs can turn routine maintenance into avoidable breakdowns or costly repairs. These risks do not affect every vehicle in the same way: use your owner’s manual as the authority for service intervals, fluid specifications and inspection procedures. AAA and NHTSA both emphasize that schedules vary by vehicle. NHTSA puts it plainly: “Your vehicle warranty and owner’s manual will describe regularly required vehicle maintenance.”

1. Skipping or delaying scheduled oil changes

Oil lubricates and helps protect engine components. Delaying a change beyond the interval specified for your car can leave the engine without the maintenance its manufacturer calls for. Follow the schedule in the owner’s manual rather than applying a generic mileage rule: intervals vary by vehicle and may depend on how it is driven.

2. Using the wrong oil specification

The right oil is not simply a matter of choosing a familiar brand or viscosity. Match both the viscosity grade and performance specification to the owner’s manual. AAA’s 2026 DIY maintenance guide warns that incorrect oil can increase engine wear and cause other engine problems. If the specification on a container is unclear, check the manual or ask a qualified service professional before pouring it in.

3. Using the wrong coolant—or routinely topping up with water

Coolant type matters. AAA warns that incorrect coolant or routine water top-offs can contribute to corrosion, overheating, water-pump damage or sludge. Water may be an emergency measure to help reach a repair shop, but it is not a routine coolant substitute. Check the manual for the required coolant and follow its instructions for checking or topping up the system.

4. Overfilling fluids

Adding more fluid than the specified range is not extra protection. Overfilled oil, coolant, brake fluid or transmission fluid can cause leaks, excess pressure or other mechanical problems. Read the manual before checking or adding fluid; it may specify whether the vehicle or engine should be hot or cold and how to read the level. If a level is already above the marked range, do not keep driving or attempt a correction without knowing the vehicle’s procedure.

5. Ignoring tire pressure

Incorrect tire pressure can compromise safety and tire life. Check pressure when the tires are cold and use the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation, usually shown on the driver-door placard or in the owner’s manual. The pressure molded into a tire’s sidewall is not the vehicle’s target pressure. NHTSA recommends checking tire pressure regularly, including before long trips.

6. Waiting too long to address worn or damaged tires

Low tread or visible damage can leave a tire less able to perform, especially on wet roads. NHTSA advises inspecting tires at least monthly and before long trips for cuts, bulges, cracks and uneven wear. AAA reports that wet-weather performance deteriorates significantly at 4/32 inch of tread depth and recommends replacement at that depth; this is AAA’s recommendation, not a universal legal minimum. Have a tire professional assess damage, uneven wear or tread that is approaching that point.

7. Neglecting brake-fluid maintenance

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time. AAA explains that moisture can corrode internal brake components and contribute to failure or costly damage. The service interval depends on the vehicle; AAA says many manufacturers recommend brake-fluid service every two or three years. Check your manual for the interval that applies to your car rather than treating that range as a universal schedule.

8. Ignoring brake warning signs

Arrange a brake inspection if braking causes pulsations, pulling, unusual noises or a longer stopping distance. AAA’s guidance is to address such problems promptly rather than waiting for them to worsen. If braking performance is seriously reduced, avoid driving the vehicle and arrange professional help.

9. Forgetting battery checks and connections

A battery check is part of regular maintenance, and loose connections can cause preventable breakdowns. Include the battery and its connections in routine inspections or ask a service professional to check them. No single battery replacement age applies to every vehicle, so use the condition of the battery and vehicle-specific guidance rather than replacing it by a universal age rule.

10. Neglecting the spare tire—or assuming reminders cover every service

Check the spare as well as the tires on the car

A spare can lose pressure or become cracked or dry-rotted while out of sight. AAA’s 2026 DIY maintenance guide recommends including it in checks. Follow the vehicle instructions for its pressure and inspection; a compact spare may have different requirements from the regular tires.

Track services that may not trigger a dashboard reminder

Maintenance reminders do not necessarily cover every time- or mileage-based service. AAA’s Car Care Basics notes that items such as brake fluid, coolant or timing-belt replacement may require tracking separately. Use the maintenance schedule in the manual alongside any dashboard alerts, and keep a record of completed services.

Amazon Basics 65-Piece General Household Home Repair and Mechanic's Hand Tool Kit Set with Storage Case, Portable, Non-Slip Handles, Black
  • Made with high quality steel alloy
  • Ergonomic non-slip plastic handle
  • Convenient blow-molded carry case
  • Includes everything you need for basic DIY and household repairs

A practical routine for staying ahead of problems

  1. Read the maintenance schedule. Note the time- and mileage-based services, fluid specifications and inspection instructions that apply to your vehicle.
  2. Make a simple tracking record. Record completed services and upcoming due dates so you are not relying on dashboard reminders alone.
  3. Check tires regularly. Measure pressure cold against the vehicle placard or manual, and inspect for damage and uneven wear at least monthly and before long trips, as NHTSA advises.
  4. Pay attention to changes. Leaks, unusual brake sounds, vibration, pulling, warning lights or longer stopping distances warrant attention rather than being dismissed as normal.
  5. Get help when the procedure is unclear. If a fluid check, correction or repair requires a procedure you cannot confirm in the manual, ask a qualified professional instead of guessing.

AAA’s 2014 survey of its Approved Auto Repair network found that 88% of surveyed repair shops reported motorists frequently skipped brake-fluid service, while 82% said battery checks were commonly missed. Those figures describe reports from the participating repair network, not a direct measurement of all drivers. They illustrate why keeping a vehicle-specific maintenance record matters.
