This is an editorial selection, not a definitive industry-wide ranking: the best-documented examples in the available manufacturer histories are heavily weighted toward Audi, with Volvo’s 850 providing a significant alternative.
What cars had five-cylinder engines?
The ten entries below are ranked by historical role, not by power, sales, or a universal measure of importance. Several are different generations or derivatives of the same nameplate because each marks a distinct step in the engine’s story. Audi’s official histories provide especially strong documentation for its cars; this selection should not be read as a claim that other manufacturers never built five-cylinder cars.

Why did Audi use a five-cylinder engine?
Audi’s account of the original Audi 100 explains the packaging decision. The development team found that four-cylinder engines did not meet its performance goals, while an inline six was ruled out because of space and weight-distribution concerns. The five-cylinder was a compromise in the useful sense: it added a cylinder without requiring the longer package Audi considered unsuitable for the car.
1. Audi 100 (C2 / Type 43): the production debut
Audi says its five-cylinder engine debuted in the second-generation Audi 100 in 1976. The original gasoline engine displaced 2,144 cc and produced 136 PS. Its significance is not just that it was an early example: it established a configuration Audi would develop across gasoline, diesel and performance applications. Audi’s 2025 history

2. Audi 200 5T: turbocharged gasoline
A year after the five-cylinder’s initial debut, Audi put a turbocharged five-cylinder gasoline engine in its flagship Audi 200 5T. Audi identifies it as the first turbocharged five-cylinder gasoline engine. Its 2026 exhibition release gives the model’s output as 125 kW/170 PS. That makes it a distinct milestone from the original 100: the engine concept was no longer only a packaging solution, but a basis for higher-performance development. Audi, 2026
3. Audi 100 TDI: direct-injection diesel
Audi identifies the 1989 Audi 100 TDI as a landmark for direct-injection diesel technology. The historical page gives its 2.5-litre engine an output of 88 kW/120 hp. This belongs in the story because the five-cylinder line was not confined to turbocharged gasoline performance: Audi also used the configuration for an important diesel development. 4. Audi 90 quattro: a motorsport-era candidate
The Audi 90 quattro appears among the five-cylinder vehicles selected for Audi’s 2026 exhibition. Its name makes it a natural car to consider in the performance and competition story, but the cited exhibition material alone does not establish specific race results. It is therefore included as a documented five-cylinder model, not on the strength of an unsourced championship claim. Audi, 2026
5. Audi S2 Coupé: a bridge to later performance models
Audi also includes the S2 Coupé in that exhibition. It represents the continuing use of five-cylinder power in a dedicated performance coupe after the engine’s early Audi 100 and 200 roles. The available source confirms its place in the exhibition’s five-cylinder group but does not provide a model-year-specific specification here. Audi, 2026

6. Audi Avant RS2: the performance wagon
The Avant RS2 deserves a place for the way it joined the five-cylinder story to the high-performance wagon. Audi describes it as the most powerful production station wagon of its time and says it established the tradition of Audi RS performance models. Those are the manufacturer’s historical characterizations; they explain why Audi treats the RS2 as a defining model, while avoiding an unsupported comparison of its performance with every contemporary wagon. Audi, 2026
7. Audi S6: a later chapter, with generation unspecified
The S6 appears in Audi’s five-cylinder exhibition list, demonstrating that the configuration continued into later production models. The cited exhibit announcement does not say which S6 generation or provide an engine specification, so it supports the model’s inclusion in the historical display but not a more precise account of its version or output. 8. Audi TT RS: the sports-car application
Audi’s history of the TT RS places the five-cylinder in a compact sports-car setting and notes that TT RS production ended. That adds a different body style and role to a story otherwise strongly associated with sedans, coupes and wagons. The cited historical page is useful for the model’s place in the lineage, but it does not support treating every TT RS generation as having identical specifications. Audi historical page

9. Volvo 850 and 850 T5-R: transverse layout, estate racing story
Yes. Volvo’s 850 introduced a transverse five-cylinder engine, which the company identifies as one of four world-first features for the model. Volvo’s heritage history lists five-cylinder gasoline and diesel options. The layout makes the 850 an important counterpoint to Audi’s story: it shows the configuration used in a different manufacturer’s packaging approach, rather than merely extending Audi’s model family. Volvo says it returned to racing in the British Touring Car Championship in 1994 with an 850 estate, and that the 850 T5-R launched that same year. The company describes the T5-R as the most powerful Volvo to that point. The racing estate and the road-going T5-R give the 850 a particularly visible performance story, though they should not be conflated: one is Volvo’s account of its BTCC return, the other a production model introduced in the same year.
