Consider an Africa Twin if your plans include adventure-style travel and some unpaved roads. Honda’s historical account traces the model’s design roots to the NXR750 rally machine; it says the machine won the motorcycle division of the Paris-Dakar Rally four years in a row beginning in 1986. Honda notes that used bikes can bring service and maintenance costs beyond the sale price, and that establishing a used motorcycle’s history can be more difficult. Its buyer guide says: “Used models are generally more affordable, but they often come with additional ‘hidden costs’ in terms of service and maintenance.” Build your budget around the full cost of ownership, not just the asking price.
- Ask for maintenance records and a clear explanation of recent work.
- Review the title and VIN through appropriate local processes; look for signs of crash repairs and unexplained modifications.
- Check whether the bike starts cold, runs normally, and shows leaks or electrical issues. A seller’s warm-up before arrival may make a cold-start assessment impossible.
- Assess parts availability and access to a qualified mechanic in your area.
- Budget for gear, insurance, maintenance, tires, and repairs that may be due soon.
- Test ride only if you are legally permitted and can do so safely. Otherwise, arrange an inspection by a qualified motorcycle mechanic.
Honda’s basic walk-around checklist
- Tires: Check pressure and look for cuts. Honda says the correct pressure is in the owner’s manual.
- Controls: Look for kinks, stiffness, or unusual operation.
- Lights: Test the headlight, brake light, and turn signals.
- Fluids: Check oil, fuel, and coolant levels where applicable.
- Chain-drive bikes: Check chain condition and tension.
- Brakes: Check them as the motorcycle rolls off.

Is it better to buy a used or new Honda motorcycle?
A used bike may have a lower purchase price, but its maintenance needs and history can be less certain. A new bike avoids unknown prior ownership but may cost more upfront. Compare the specific used motorcycle’s asking price plus likely immediate service, tires, gear, and insurance against the cost and terms of a new option available to you. Honda says pre-owned HondaCare may be available for motorcycles outside factory warranty when bought from dealer inventory and when age and inspection requirements are met; ask the dealer to confirm eligibility for the exact bike.
