Neither figure guarantees what you will pay locally. This list favors cars that pair an upscale or distinctive impression with engaging driving—not styling alone. New-car prices and model-year availability are U.S.-oriented and can change; used prices depend on condition, mileage, trim, history, and location.
How to choose a car that looks expensive and is enjoyable to drive
Separate the impression a car makes from the experience of owning it. Styling and cabin appointments are subjective; steering, handling, power, passenger space, and cargo room matter on every drive. 2. 2026 Toyota GR86
For a coupe rather than a convertible, the GR86 combines a low, athletic profile with the kind of chassis tuning that rewards a winding road. Car and Driver ranks it second among affordable sports cars and lists a $32,695 starting price, praising its sharp steering and tuned chassis (Car and Driver).
Compared with the Miata, the fixed-roof coupe has a different practicality profile, but it remains a focused sports car rather than a spacious family vehicle. It suits drivers who want direct steering and coupe styling more than luxury-car isolation.

3. 2026 Subaru BRZ
The BRZ is a close alternative to the GR86, with manual-transmission availability and chassis tuning central to its appeal. Car and Driver ranks it third and lists a $37,055 starting price, describing it as an accessible sports car (Car and Driver).
Its appeal is the balance of a low coupe shape and an involved drive. Compare the BRZ and GR86 by trim, equipment, and local price rather than assuming their differences are purely cosmetic.
Seven used cars with style and driving character under a separate budget frame
The following models come from an Edmunds used-performance guide republished by the Associated Press. That guide identifies enthusiast choices that have been available below $25,000; it does not establish a current price for every example. Treat the threshold as a shopping frame, not a quote. An individual car’s year, trim, mileage, condition, service history, and modifications can change its value substantially (AP/Edmunds used-car guide).
4. 2015–2018 BMW 2 Series: M235i or M240i
The six-cylinder M235i and M240i bring a compact luxury-coupe profile, quick acceleration, balanced handling, and long-distance comfort. The guide cites output from 320 horsepower in the M235i to 335 horsepower in the 2017–2018 M240i. It says the earlier M235i is easier to find below $25,000.

This is the strongest fit here if you want a premium badge and a more comfortable, composed grand-touring character than a tiny roadster offers. As with any older performance BMW, condition and maintenance records deserve close scrutiny.
5. 2008–2013 Chevrolet Corvette C6
The C6 Corvette delivers unmistakable sports-car presence, rear-wheel drive, strong braking, and highway comfort. The guide cites a V8 with up to 430 horsepower and recommends 2008-and-newer examples for more power and an improved interior. It also calls out the low-rent cabin, so this is a performance-value pick, not the best choice for a luxury-feeling interior.
Look for a documented maintenance history. The Corvette’s power and performance capability make a thorough condition check especially important.
6. 2019–2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata
A used Miata offers the same compact roadster appeal as the new model at a different purchase-price point. The guide cites 181 horsepower, precise steering, predictable handling, and an available six-speed manual. It says 2019-and-newer cars add 26 horsepower over earlier models and a telescoping steering wheel.

The cabin is snug, and tall drivers may find it cramped. Sit in the exact car you are considering before buying, especially if you plan to drive it regularly.
7. 2017–2020 Subaru BRZ or Toyota 86
These co-developed coupes are described as connected and mechanical to drive. Post-2017 examples have up to 205 horsepower, revised gearing, and revised suspension tuning. The guide says the Toyota 86 is often slightly cheaper than the BRZ; the BRZ Performance package adds upgraded brakes and suspension.
They make sense for someone who wants a low-slung coupe with an involved feel but is shopping used rather than buying a 2026 sports car. Compare equipment and condition carefully: a cheaper example may not have the same brakes, suspension, or history as another.
8. 2015–2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI
The GTI is the practical choice among these used picks: its four-door hatchback body combines everyday usability with entertaining handling. Depending on year and equipment, the turbocharged four-cylinder produces up to 228 horsepower. Choose it if passenger and cargo usefulness matter as much as driving fun. Trim and year affect both performance equipment and features, so verify the specific car’s configuration rather than relying on the GTI name alone.
9. 2026 Audi A3
Edmunds includes the A3 in its styling-led roundup, describing a plush interior and fun demeanor while noting limited rear-seat space (Edmunds). It is a plausible choice for shoppers who prioritize a premium cabin and compact luxury-sedan appearance, but the source does not provide a price or fuel-economy figure for it here. Confirm current local pricing and the exact model-year specification before comparing it with the sports cars above.
10. Alfa Romeo Tonale
Edmunds describes the Tonale as having premium character and a sport-tuned suspension, making it the styling-led crossover option in this group (Edmunds). Those are editorial impressions, not a substitute for a test drive. The cited roundup does not establish a price or fuel-economy figure here, so check the current trim and local market before deciding whether it fits your budget.

Edmunds also names the 2027 Kia Telluride and Volvo XC40 as vehicles with upscale styling or cabin appeal. The Telluride roundup entry concerns the 2027 model and describes its restyling as resembling a Land Rover; it should not be treated as a claim about a 2026 Telluride. Edmunds calls the XC40 handsome and nicely appointed. These are styling judgments, and the cited roundup does not provide price, fuel-economy, or driving-performance figures for either vehicle in this context (Edmunds).
Before buying a used performance car
A low asking price can be overwhelmed by deferred repairs or an unsuitable insurance and maintenance bill. The Edmunds guide carried by AP advises avoiding cars with neglect, deferred maintenance, or heavy modifications. Use these checks to reduce risk:
- Request service records and compare them with the car’s age and mileage.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic.
- Use an OBD diagnostic scanner only as an additional screen; it cannot certify a car’s mechanical condition.
- Get an insurance quote and estimate fuel, maintenance, and resale costs before committing.
- Check the exact trim, options, modifications, accident history, and ownership records for the vehicle you are inspecting.
These precautions are especially relevant for the BMW and Corvette, where performance hardware and prior use can make condition more consequential. A clean-looking exterior is not evidence of sound maintenance.
