The BMW B58 is the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six behind some of BMW’s most successful modern performance and luxury cars—and, in Toyota form, the GR Supra. It first appeared in the U.S. market in the 2016 BMW 340i, then spread into compact coupes, sports sedans, luxury grand tourers, SUVs, and the Toyota Supra.

Calling every B58-powered vehicle “ultra-reliable” would go too far. The engine has earned a strong reputation because of its closed-deck construction, sophisticated thermal management, smooth torque delivery, and broad application range. However, reliability still depends on the exact engine revision, production date, maintenance history, cooling system, tuning, and the rest of the vehicle surrounding the engine.

BMW’s B58 family is one of the company’s most important modern engines. It combines the natural smoothness and balance of an inline-six with direct injection, variable valve timing and lift, turbocharging, and substantial cooling engineering. Depending on the application, BMW rated versions of the family from 320 horsepower in the original 340i to 382 horsepower in several later U.S.-market models. Newer B58TU2 versions add further combustion-efficiency changes and 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance.

The cars below are not ranked by reliability. They show how widely BMW adapted the same basic engine family, from a compact rear-wheel-drive coupe to a full-size executive sedan. Specifications are market- and model-year-dependent, so a VIN, production date, and exact chassis should always take priority over a general internet specification.

What makes the B58 different?

The B58 is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six that BMW launched in 2015 as part of its modular engine family. BMW’s technical description identifies a closed-deck design, an integrated coolant radiator in the intake passage, and an optimized combustion process. The closed deck helps provide a rigid cylinder-block structure, an important foundation for a high-output turbocharged engine.

Later BMW technical material describes an aluminum crankcase and cylinder head, a single twin-scroll turbocharger, high-pressure fuel injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve lift, and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. Those systems help explain the engine’s combination of low-speed torque, smooth power delivery, strong top-end performance, and relatively flexible packaging.

Thermal management is another major part of the B58 story. BMW describes a specialized heat-management module rather than a conventional thermostat, along with an integrated approach to managing coolant and intake temperatures. That complexity is beneficial when the system is healthy, but it also means that a used B58 car is not mechanically simple. Pumps, hoses, valves, sensors, and plastic cooling components remain part of the ownership equation.

1. BMW 340i: where the modern B58 story began

The F30 BMW 340i was the first production model explicitly identified in BMW’s U.S. press material as using the new B58 modular inline-six. It arrived for the 2016 model-year era as the successor to the N55-powered 335i.

BMW rated the launch 340i at 320 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. The company quoted 0–60 mph in 4.8 seconds for the rear-wheel-drive sedan and 4.6 seconds for the xDrive version. The engine used BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology together with direct injection, Double-VANOS, and VALVETRONIC.

The 340i matters because it established the B58’s core character: quick but civil, torquey without feeling peaky, and comfortable enough for daily use. It is also one of the clearest examples of why the engine developed such a favorable reputation. The car feels like a normal BMW sedan until the driver asks for more, at which point the inline-six supplies serious performance without the coarse behavior associated with many highly stressed four-cylinder engines.

2. BMW M240i: the compact enthusiast’s B58

The F22 coupe and F23 convertible BMW M240i placed the B58 in a smaller, lighter, more overtly enthusiast-focused package. BMW’s 2017 Wards-related material listed 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft, with a quoted 0–60-mph time of 4.4 seconds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compared with the larger 340i, the M240i lets the engine’s torque and smoothness define a more compact rear-wheel-drive car. The result is a particularly appealing early B58 application for drivers who want six-cylinder performance without moving into a large sedan or SUV.

Exact performance and equipment depend on body style, transmission, drivetrain, market, and model year. A used-car shopper should not assume that every M240i has the same differential, transmission calibration, options, or acceleration figure simply because the badge is identical.

3. BMW M340i: the benchmark sports sedan

The G20 BMW M340i shows how far BMW developed the B58 after its debut. In the cited 2020 U.S. specification, the engine produced 382 horsepower at 5,800–6,500 rpm and 369 lb-ft from 1,800–5,000 rpm. BMW quoted 0–60 mph in 4.1 seconds for the xDrive sedan and 30 mpg highway in the cited configuration.

This is an M Performance model rather than a full BMW M3, but that distinction should not obscure its capability. The M340i combines the B58 with M-specific calibration and chassis hardware, giving the practical G20 sedan enough acceleration to challenge older dedicated sports cars while retaining four doors, a usable cabin, and long-distance comfort.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The technical specification also illustrates the B58’s engineering formula: aluminum crankcase and cylinder head, a single twin-scroll turbocharger, high-pressure injection, VALVETRONIC, and Double-VANOS. The 382-hp figure is specific to the cited U.S. application; it should not be applied to every B58-powered car.

4. BMW M440i: the B58 as a stylish grand tourer

The G22 coupe, G23 convertible, and G26 Gran Coupe versions of the BMW M440i use the B58 family in a more style-led 4 Series package. BMW technical data for the 4 Series Gran Coupe identifies the engine as B58B30O1 and describes weight-optimized pistons and connecting rods, a twin-scroll turbocharger, and indirect charge-air cooling.

The M440i demonstrates the engine’s ability to deliver broad, effortless torque in a car positioned between a conventional luxury coupe and a serious performance model. It is less narrowly focused than a small M240i and less overtly sedan-oriented than an M340i, making it a natural grand-tourer choice.

Coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe versions are not mechanically identical in every respect. Body style, drivetrain, production date, market, suspension specification, and software can all change the ownership experience. Verify the exact engine code and equipment before ordering parts or comparing performance figures.

5. BMW 540i: the B58 as a long-distance express

BMW introduced the G30-generation 540i as part of the 5 Series lineup with a turbocharged inline-six. In this application, the B58’s most important quality is not its ability to produce a headline acceleration number; it is the way the engine moves a substantial executive sedan with quiet, sustained torque.

The later G60 540i xDrive shows the continued role of BMW’s highly developed six-cylinder powertrain in a larger luxury car. BMW cites a 0–60-mph time of 4.4 seconds for that configuration, a reminder that the 540i is considerably more than a relaxed commuter.

The 540i is a useful counterpoint to the M240i. Both use the same broad engine family, but the 5 Series prioritizes refinement, isolation, cabin comfort, and highway composure. It is one of the strongest examples of BMW scaling the B58 concept without needing a V8 for the model’s everyday mission.

6. BMW 740i: the B58 evolves for a flagship sedan

The G11 and G12 740i used a turbocharged inline-six from BMW’s modular engine family. In the G70 7 Series, BMW explicitly identifies the 2023 740i engine as the upgraded B58TU2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The B58TU2 application adds a Miller-cycle combustion strategy, redesigned intake ports and combustion chambers, electronically controlled VANOS, and 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. These changes show that the B58 is not a frozen 2015 design simply carried from one chassis to another. BMW continued adapting the family to improve efficiency, emissions performance, refinement, and integration with electrified accessories.

In the 740i, the engine is expected to deliver quiet, nearly effortless propulsion rather than the sharper responses associated with an M240i or M340i. It is the clearest example on this list of the B58 becoming a sophisticated luxury-car powertrain rather than merely a performance engine.

7. BMW 840i: a luxury grand-tourer with six-cylinder power

The G14 convertible, G15 coupe, and G16 Gran Coupe BMW 840i brought the B58 into the company’s flagship grand-touring family. BMW’s 2020 technical data identifies the engine as B58B30M1, displacing 2,998 cc and producing 335 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque in that application.

The 840i is important because it shows how much character the B58 can provide without requiring the more expensive and heavier V8 versions of the 8 Series. The engine supplies enough torque for relaxed high-speed touring, while its inline-six balance suits a refined coupe or convertible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions, as well as coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe body styles, vary by configuration and market. The 840i badge identifies the powertrain family, not a single universal specification.

8. BMW Z4 M40i: the roadster interpretation

The G29 BMW Z4 M40i is the B58 in open-top sports-car form. BMW’s U.S. engine-award material identifies the Z4 M40i Roadster as one of the vehicles using the 382-hp version of the engine.

The roadster’s short body and two-seat layout give the B58 a different role from its role in an M340i or X3. Its broad torque makes effortless acceleration available in a high gear, while the inline-six remains refined enough for relaxed cruising with the roof down.

The Z4 and Toyota GR Supra were developed as related sports cars, but they are not identical vehicles. Suspension tuning, software, packaging, interior design, transmission offerings, cooling details, and service requirements can differ. The Z4 should be evaluated as a BMW roadster, not simply as a convertible version of the Supra.

9. BMW X3 M40i: practical performance from an inline-six

The G01 BMW X3 M40i demonstrates why BMW installed the B58 in so many different vehicle types. BMW identifies the X3 M40i as one of the vehicles receiving the 382-hp version in its 2020 U.S. release.

Here, the engine works with all-wheel drive, elevated seating, and SUV utility. The result is a practical performance vehicle with enough power for rapid merging and passing, but with the cargo space and driving position expected from an X3.

The X3 M40i also makes an important reliability distinction easier to understand. The B58 may be a strong engine, but the SUV around it has more systems and components than a simple rear-wheel-drive coupe. Buyers must inspect the cooling system, transmission, xDrive hardware, suspension, electronics, emissions equipment, and body systems—not just listen for engine problems.

10. Toyota GR Supra 3.0: the B58 outside BMW

The A90/A91 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 is the non-BMW-badged entry on this list. Toyota’s launch product information identifies its engine as a 2,998-cc twin-scroll-turbocharged inline-six with direct injection, variable valve timing and lift, and 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Toyota raised the six-cylinder Supra’s output to 382 horsepower for 2021, and current Toyota material continues to identify the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six as the Supra’s six-cylinder engine. The relationship makes the Supra a useful proof point for the B58 family’s flexibility, but it should not be described as a BMW model.

Toyota’s calibration, packaging, software, cooling strategy, transmission availability, warranty support, and service procedures are not automatically identical to those of BMW vehicles. A Supra owner should use Toyota-specific parts information and service documentation, even when researching the shared BMW-sourced engine architecture.

Why the B58 earned such a strong reputation

It is smooth without being weak

An inline-six has excellent primary and secondary balance, which contributes to the B58’s smooth character. Turbocharging gives it substantial torque at ordinary engine speeds, while the six-cylinder layout avoids the harshness that can accompany highly boosted smaller engines.

Its structure suits a turbocharged engine

BMW describes the closed-deck block as providing high stability. Combined with the aluminum crankcase and cylinder head used in documented applications, the design gives the engine a strong foundation for high specific output without turning it into a crude competition engine.

Its air, fuel, and valve systems are sophisticated

The B58 combines a single twin-scroll turbocharger with high-pressure injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve lift, and Double-VANOS camshaft timing. These systems allow BMW to balance performance, drivability, emissions, and fuel efficiency across very different vehicles.

Its thermal management is deliberate

BMW’s technical material emphasizes the engine’s integrated coolant and intake-passage design and specialized heat-management module. Effective temperature control is essential in a turbocharged engine that may be used for commuting, towing-like loads in an SUV, repeated acceleration, or sustained highway driving.

It is genuinely modular

The B58 appears in compact cars, executive sedans, luxury coupes, SUVs, roadsters, and the GR Supra. That spread is not just a marketing curiosity. It shows that BMW designed an engine family adaptable enough to serve different cooling packages, software calibrations, transmissions, body weights, and emissions requirements.

BMW also recorded consecutive Wards 10 Best Engine recognitions for versions of the engine family. Awards do not establish a lifetime reliability guarantee, but they help explain why the B58 became one of the most respected modern turbocharged inline-sixes.

Is the B58 really ultra-reliable?

It is better described as one of BMW’s better-regarded modern turbocharged engines than as an ultra-reliable engine in the absolute sense. The favorable reputation is deserved, but it can be misunderstood.

BMW’s own documentation describes specialized oil, cooling, and service procedures. BMW also published a 2016 delivery-stop procedure involving inspection and replacement of a crankshaft guide bearing in affected B58 applications. That document should not be turned into a claim that every B58 has a guide-bearing defect, but it is a useful reminder that a well-engineered engine can still have production-specific service actions.

On a used vehicle, engine reliability is only one part of total vehicle reliability. The car may also need work on cooling pumps, hoses, plastic components, sensors, electronics, emissions hardware, transmissions, driveline components, xDrive parts, suspension, and air-conditioning systems. A strong engine does not make an older BMW maintenance-free.

What to check before buying a used B58 car

  1. Identify the exact car. Record the chassis code, production date, model year, engine revision, drivetrain, body style, and market. A 2016 340i, a 2020 M340i, a G70 740i with B58TU2, and a Toyota GR Supra 3.0 share family DNA but do not share one universal specification or parts catalog.
  2. Prioritize service records over the badge. Look for documented engine-oil and filter service, correct fluids, cooling-system work, spark-plug replacement where applicable, software or recall completion, and evidence that the car was maintained on schedule.
  3. Inspect the cooling system carefully. Check for low coolant, dried residue, leaks, warning messages, overheating history, unusual smells, and evidence of previous repairs. The B58’s thermal-management system is technically advanced, but its pumps, valves, hoses, and plastic components still age.
  4. Scan the car before purchase. A BMW-compatible OBD2 diagnostic scanner can help identify stored or pending faults, but compatibility and coding functions vary widely. A generic code reader is not a substitute for a complete BMW-capable diagnostic inspection.
  5. Look for tuning and abuse. Ask whether the ECU was modified, whether the car has run higher boost, and whether original hardware and software are available. Modifications do not automatically make a B58 unreliable, but they change the risk calculation and can complicate warranty or service history.
  6. Check the whole vehicle. Inspect the automatic transmission, differential, xDrive system where fitted, suspension, brakes, electronics, air-conditioning, tires, and body structure. The engine can be healthy while the overall car is an expensive purchase.
  7. Use model-specific documentation. DIY owners may find a BMW B58 engine repair manual or BMW technical reference useful for understanding the engine, but a reference manual is not a replacement for the correct factory service information for a particular chassis. Supra owners should use Toyota-specific documentation for Toyota systems.

Maintenance details that matter

BMW’s B58 technical manual states that the oil-filter service requires replacement of the two O-rings whenever the filter cover and drain plug are opened. It also specifies the use of BMW-approved engine oils. That is a small detail with practical importance: the correct filter element, seals, oil specification, and installation procedure all matter more than simply buying the cheapest part advertised as fitting a B58.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For owners performing routine service, a BMW B58 oil-filter service kit can be a sensible consumable to research. Fitment must be verified by VIN, chassis, production date, engine revision, and part number before ordering. Even a listing that references a number such as BMW 11428575211 oil filter should not be assumed to fit every BMW or Toyota application using a B58-family engine.

Owners who do not want to perform the work themselves should use a BMW specialist service provider familiar with the specific chassis. That is particularly valuable when the inspection involves cooling-system diagnosis, software faults, xDrive, or a modified vehicle. For a Supra, Toyota-specific expertise is more appropriate; a Toyota GR Supra specialist service or parts source may understand the vehicle-level differences that a BMW parts catalog does not.

Which B58 car should you choose?

  • Choose the 340i if you want the original U.S. B58 sedan application and a more understated daily driver.
  • Choose the M240i if compact dimensions and enthusiast appeal matter more than rear-seat or cargo space.
  • Choose the M340i if you want the strongest all-round sports sedan balance in the list, with modern performance and everyday usability.
  • Choose the M440i if coupe, convertible, or Gran Coupe styling is more important than maximum practicality.
  • Choose the 540i or 740i if quiet high-speed travel, cabin comfort, and effortless torque are the priority.
  • Choose the 840i if you want the B58 in a more expensive luxury grand-tourer format.
  • Choose the Z4 M40i if an open-top, two-seat driving experience is the main attraction.
  • Choose the X3 M40i if you need SUV practicality without giving up a powerful six-cylinder engine.
  • Choose the GR Supra 3.0 if you want a dedicated Toyota sports car with BMW-sourced B58-family power, while accepting Toyota-specific service and vehicle systems.

The best purchase is not necessarily the newest or most powerful one. A well-documented, un abused example with a healthy cooling system and no unexplained tuning history is generally a more convincing buy than a neglected car wearing a more desirable badge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all BMW B58 engines identical?

No. The B58 is an engine family with different revisions, calibrations, cooling arrangements, outputs, emissions equipment, and vehicle integrations. Always verify the chassis, production date, engine code, drivetrain, and market before comparing specifications or ordering parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Toyota GR Supra 3.0 a BMW?

No. The GR Supra is a Toyota sports car that uses a BMW-sourced B58-family inline-six in its 3.0-liter model. Toyota’s calibration, software, packaging, warranty, parts, and service requirements are vehicle-specific.

Does a B58-powered BMW have low maintenance costs?

Not necessarily. The engine has a strong reputation, but turbocharging, advanced thermal management, electronics, cooling components, transmissions, xDrive hardware, and BMW-specific labor can all affect ownership costs. Vehicle condition and service history matter more than the engine badge alone.

The Bottom Line

The B58 earned its reputation by combining inline-six smoothness, strong torque, robust-looking construction, sophisticated thermal management, and enough flexibility to power everything from the M240i to the 7 Series and X3 M40i. It is one of BMW’s better-regarded modern engines, not a maintenance-free guarantee. Buy the exact car—not merely the B58 label—and verify its history, revision, cooling system, software, and vehicle-level condition.
