The best sports car of 2023 depends on what you want from it: an open-top roadster, an affordable coupe, a polished grand tourer or serious performance. This editorial shortlist brings together ten 2023 model lines across those priorities; it is not an official ranking from Kelley Blue Book or Car and Driver. If you’re asking, “Which 2023 sports car is best for me?”, start with the body style, driving character and everyday role that matter most.
These are historical model-year choices, not current new-car recommendations. Prices shown on Kelley Blue Book’s 2023 roundup are period-specific starting-price context and should not be treated as today’s prices. The selections below draw on the models included in KBB’s broader 21 Best Sports Cars of 2023, while the order reflects differing use cases rather than a single score.
How this 2023 sports-car shortlist is organized
“Best” is not one measurable quality. A light roadster can be more rewarding on a winding road, while a higher-powered coupe may better suit a driver who prioritizes acceleration or a premium cabin. The ten models below cover different combinations of price context, body style, powertrain and day-to-day usability. Kelley Blue Book’s list provides the broad model coverage; it does not publish this exact ten-car sequence.
Car and Driver’s 2023 10Best is a different award, not the source of this shortlist. Its process applied a $110,000 eligibility price cutoff and a week of driving qualifying cars before scoring them. That is one publication’s methodology, and its 10Best list includes vehicles beyond sports coupes and roadsters.

The table is a use-case guide, not a claim that one car objectively outranks another. KBB’s roundup includes additional vehicles, and its displayed price, rating and combined-fuel-economy figures are specific to its page and model/trim context. Because those are 2023-era values, use the original listing for historical comparisons rather than reading them as current prices.
Mazda MX-5 Miata: open-top involvement
The Miata is the natural pick when the experience of driving matters more than maximum power or a premium badge. Its roadster format makes it the shortlist’s clearest choice for someone who wants an open roof and a lightweight-feeling sports-car character.

- Opening parts, Rolling Wheels
- Easy assembly, Pre-painted metal body

Chevrolet Corvette: performance first
The Corvette represents the shortlist’s performance-forward end. It suits shoppers whose priority is a high-performance sports car rather than the smallest footprint or simplest roadster experience. Exact configuration and price depend on the particular 2023 trim; KBB’s page should be read at its listed trim level.
Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman: choose your roof
The 718 line gives shoppers a direct body-style decision: Boxster for open-air driving or Cayman for a fixed-roof coupe. Consider the Boxster if convertible motoring is central; choose the Cayman if a coupe is the priority.

Porsche 911: premium breadth
The 911 is the premium-oriented choice here for drivers who want a sports car with a more refined overall character. The model line spans configurations, so a 2023 buyer would need to compare the specific trim and body style rather than treating “911” as one uniform specification.
Ford Mustang: sporty flexibility
The Mustang belongs on a broad 2023 sports-car shortlist for drivers balancing sporting character with everyday use. Body style and trim shape the experience; decide first whether a coupe or convertible better suits how you plan to drive it.

Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86: compact coupe alternatives
The BRZ and GR86 are the shortlist’s compact fixed-roof choices. They make sense for drivers who want a dedicated coupe format rather than a roadster or a more premium grand-touring direction. Compare the individual 2023 versions and equipment before choosing between them; the broad roundup alone does not establish a universal winner.
Toyota GR Supra: 2023 manual option
Toyota announced that the 2023 GR Supra 3.0 produced 382 horsepower and that a six-speed manual was available on the 3.0, 3.0 Premium and A91-MT editions. The manual was not described as available across every Supra version. Toyota also announced that the U.S.-market 2023 A91-MT Edition would be limited to 500 units; that is a model-year production announcement, not a statement about current availability. See Toyota’s 2023 GR Supra announcement for those configuration details.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →BMW Z4: premium open-air driving
The Z4 is the shortlist’s premium roadster alternative. It is worth considering if the open-top format is important but you want a more refinement-led choice than a lightweight-focused roadster. Confirm the particular 2023 trim’s powertrain and equipment rather than assuming all Z4s share identical specifications.
Nissan Z: power with a manual or automatic
Car and Driver’s 2023 model-year review described the Nissan Z as a rear-wheel-drive coupe with a 400-horsepower twin-turbo V6, a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic. Treat those as the publication’s review specifications for the 2023 model, not a universal claim about later model years. Details are in Car and Driver’s Nissan Z coverage.
Quick Recap
How to choose the right 2023 sports car for you
- Choose the body style first. A roadster such as the MX-5 or Z4 prioritizes open-air driving; a coupe such as the BRZ, GR86, Supra or Z provides a fixed roof. The 718 and 911 lines include different body-style options.
- Set your driving priority. Decide whether you care most about light, involving driving, premium refinement, everyday flexibility or high performance. Those priorities lead to different shortlist candidates rather than one universal winner.
- Compare the exact trim and transmission. Model-line names can cover multiple configurations. The Supra’s 2023 manual availability, for example, applied to selected 3.0 versions, not every trim.
- Use 2023 prices as historical context only. KBB’s page shows listed starting prices and associated ratings and combined fuel economy for entries, but those figures are not current-market quotes. Local used-car values and present inventory are not established by that roundup.
- Separate awards from this shortlist. An award list such as Car and Driver’s 10Best has its own eligibility and evaluation rules; it is not interchangeable with a use-case-based selection of sports cars.
