For 2026 U.S.-market shoppers, the best luxury sedan depends on what matters most: the Genesis G90 is a value-minded full-size comfort pick, the Porsche Panamera favors driving engagement, and the Lucid Air is the electric-range choice. The ten cars below are a shortlist—not a universal ranking—based on current Car and Driver category coverage and MotorTrend’s full-size-sedan ranking, alongside manufacturer specifications where noted. Published starting prices are not transaction prices, and trims, equipment and availability differ.
How to choose among the best luxury sedans
Start with the job you need the car to do, then compare candidates on the same terms. A mid-size sedan may be easier to live with in tight parking; a full-size model can make rear-seat comfort a higher priority. If you are considering an EV, factor in charging access and your usual routes as well as the listed range.
- Budget: Treat listed starting prices as orientation, not a like-for-like trim comparison or a quote. Destination charges, options, dealer offers and local inventory can change the price you pay.
- Passenger comfort: Try the front and rear seats, especially if you will regularly carry passengers. Pay attention to ride, cabin noise, seat adjustments and whether controls are intuitive.
- Driving character: Decide whether relaxed cruising or a more involving drive matters more. Performance-oriented models can differ substantially in price and equipment across their trim ranges.
- Powertrain: Compare gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric choices against your driving and charging routine.
- Technology and fit: Check which features are standard or optional, and whether the car’s size, trunk and local dealer support suit your needs.
The rankings cited here use different categories and methods; they are not a single, directly comparable test of every sedan on this list.
10 luxury sedans to consider for 2026
The order below is an editorial shortlist, not a claim that one source ranked all ten in this sequence. Car and Driver’s listed prices and ratings are publication figures; Genesis and BMW specifications are manufacturer figures. Prices are U.S. listed starting prices and should be checked against current trim details and official pricing.

1. Genesis G90: full-size comfort with substantial equipment
The G90 is the shortlist’s value-minded full-size comfort candidate. MotorTrend ranks it first in its 2026 full-size-sedan list at 9.5/10 and shows a $94,245 starting price; Genesis USA lists a $92,700 starting MSRP for the 2026 base trim. Those are different source figures, so check the trim and current official quote rather than treating them as equivalent prices.
Genesis lists 375 horsepower for the 2026 G90 3.5T AWD. The manufacturer also describes standard Nappa leather, massage seating with four modes and 10 air pockets, and an available 26-speaker Bang & Olufsen system. These are manufacturer-described features, and availability can depend on configuration. (Genesis USA; MotorTrend)
2. Mercedes-Benz S-Class: flagship refinement and technology
Car and Driver lists the 2026 S-Class at $120,900 to start and rates it 9.5/10. Mercedes-Benz Media’s May 13, 2026 release describes an updated S-Class with gasoline and plug-in-hybrid powertrains, standard AIRMATIC suspension, optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL and rear-axle steering. Confirm that the specific updated version and equipment are on sale in your market before choosing a configuration.
Rank #2
- Lexus ES300h - 32713D Showcasts Model Vehicle
- 1/35 Scale Collectible Model Mid-size Luxury Sedan
- This is a 5.5"L x 2.125"W x 1.5"H Diecast Metal model with some plastic parts
- Openable Doors And Pullback Action
- 1 car, no box
Mercedes-Benz says more than half of the model—approximately 2,700 components—has been newly developed or re-engineered. That is the automaker’s characterization of its update, not an independent assessment. (Car and Driver; Mercedes-Benz Media)
3. BMW 7 Series: broad powertrain choice
MotorTrend places the 2026 7 Series second in its full-size ranking. BMW USA’s technical data lists gasoline, mild-hybrid, plug-in-hybrid and electric versions. For one gasoline version, BMW lists 394 hp and 5.2 seconds from 0–60 mph; BMW marks that acceleration figure as for comparison only. Its i7 listing shows 650 hp. Verify the exact trim and specification because those figures do not describe every 7 Series or i7. (BMW USA; MotorTrend)
4. Porsche Panamera: a performance-first choice
Car and Driver lists a $115,350 starting price for the 2026 Panamera and describes it as combining sedan practicality with sports-car driving character. Consider it if engaging driving matters more than a purely comfort-focused brief. The range covers substantially different trims, so compare actual equipment and prices rather than assuming the base figure represents the version you want. (Car and Driver)
Rank #3
- Lexus ES300h - 32713D Showcasts Model Vehicle
- 1/35 Scale Collectible Model Mid-size Luxury Sedan
- This is a 5.5"L x 2.125"W x 1.5"H Diecast Metal model with some plastic parts
- Openable Doors And Pullback Action
- 1 car, no box
5. Lucid Air: electric range and quiet EV travel
Car and Driver lists the 2026 Lucid Air from $72,400 and gives an EPA-estimated range of 420–480 miles, depending on version and configuration. Treat that as a published estimate, not a promise of the distance every car will cover on every route. Consider your charging access, typical journeys and chosen configuration alongside the range figure. (Car and Driver)
6. Bentley Flying Spur: an ultra-luxury outlier
Car and Driver lists the 2026 Flying Spur at $254,850 to start and rates it 10/10. Its place here is as an ultra-luxury and performance outlier, not a value comparison against more conventional flagship sedans. (Car and Driver)
7. Audi A8: an understated full-size alternative
MotorTrend includes the 2026 A8 fourth in its full-size ranking, with an 8.5/10 rating and a $96,495 starting price. It is also included in Car and Driver’s full-size coverage. If you prefer a less attention-seeking presentation, the A8 is worth a look; that description is an editorial interpretation, not a manufacturer specification. (MotorTrend; Car and Driver)
8. Genesis G80: a mid-size step down in size and price
Car and Driver lists the 2026 G80 at $59,945 to start and rates it 9.5/10, describing it as a well-rounded mid-size sedan. It is a natural candidate if the G90’s full-size footprint or price is more than you need. (Car and Driver)
9. Mercedes-Benz E-Class: a balanced mid-size sedan
Car and Driver gives the 2026 E-Class sedan a 10/10 rating and lists a $65,150 starting price. The publication describes a blend of luxury, comfort, technology and driving enjoyment, making it a broad-use mid-size option to compare with the G80 and A6. (Car and Driver)
10. Audi A6: redesigned mid-size technology contender
Car and Driver lists the 2026 A6 at $65,495 to start, rates it 9.5/10 and lists 23 mpg combined. Its coverage describes a redesigned sedan with technology features. Check the exact drivetrain, trim and regional availability before relying on the fuel-economy figure for a particular car. (Car and Driver)
Should you also consider the Lexus ES?
The 2026 Lexus ES is a sensible alternative if a lower listed entry price and fuel efficiency matter more than keeping the ten-car mix above. Car and Driver lists it from $51,095 and gives a combined 44–46 mpg range, describing it as quiet premium transportation. Confirm the specific powertrain and local availability before comparing it with a particular trim of the other sedans. (Car and Driver)
How to make the final choice
- Set a realistic price ceiling. Compare the trim and equipment you would actually buy, not just each model’s entry price.
- Choose the size class. Decide whether mid-size maneuverability or full-size passenger space better fits your parking and regular passengers.
- Match the powertrain to your routine. For an EV or plug-in hybrid, consider where and how often you can charge; for any model, confirm the exact version’s specifications.
- Test the seats and controls. Sit in both rows if rear passengers matter, and try the infotainment and driver-assistance controls you expect to use.
- Check local availability and support. Ask dealers for current trim, equipment, pricing and delivery information in your area.
Reliability, safety-test results, insurance, maintenance, depreciation, ownership costs and transaction prices are not compared here; the available rankings and specifications do not establish like-for-like results on those measures.
