Ten SUVs in Cars.com’s May 23, 2024 list of vehicles priced under $40,000 with both an IIHS award and a five-star NHTSA rating had reported starting prices from $26,415 to $38,045, including destination. The list includes both Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ winners; it is a dated selection, not a ranking of every 2024 IIHS-awarded SUV. Prices below are Cars.com’s model-year 2024 figures, not current quotes. Cars.com’s list and pricing basis.
Affordable 2024 IIHS-awarded SUVs, ranked by reported price
The order below follows the prices Cars.com reported, with destination included. The five-star NHTSA requirement narrows this selection: it should not be read as the ten cheapest SUVs among all 2024 IIHS award winners.
| Rank | SUV | Cars.com reported 2024 price, including destination | 2024 IIHS award | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mazda CX-30 | $26,415 | Top Safety Pick+ | IIHS lists the award for 2024–25 models. |
| 2 | Honda HR-V | $26,450 | Top Safety Pick+ | IIHS lists the award for 2024–25 models. |
| 3 | Kia Sportage | $28,565 | Top Safety Pick | IIHS lists the award for 2024–25 models. |
| 4 | Hyundai Tucson | $28,875 | Top Safety Pick+ | IIHS qualification applies to vehicles built after March 2024. |
| 5 | Honda CR-V | $30,850 | Top Safety Pick+ | Check the exact model year and vehicle against IIHS award eligibility. |
| 6 | Mazda CX-50 | $31,720 | Top Safety Pick+ | IIHS lists a production-condition qualification; confirm the specific vehicle. |
| 7 | Subaru Ascent | $35,740 | Top Safety Pick | Confirm model-year eligibility for the vehicle being considered. |
| 8 | Kia Telluride | $37,585 | Top Safety Pick+ | IIHS lists the award for 2024–25 models. |
| 9 | Nissan Pathfinder | $38,040 | Top Safety Pick | Confirm model-year eligibility for the vehicle being considered. |
| 10 | Hyundai Palisade | $38,045 | Top Safety Pick | Confirm model-year eligibility for the vehicle being considered. |
Award names and year or production-date conditions should be checked in the IIHS 2024 award list before buying. A model’s award does not automatically establish that every trim, build date, or neighboring model year qualifies.
What the 2024 Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards mean
IIHS awards assess specific crash tests and safety equipment. The two 2024 tiers had different requirements, so “Top Safety Pick” and “Top Safety Pick+” are not interchangeable labels.

Top Safety Pick+
For the 2024 award, a vehicle needed good ratings in the small overlap front and updated side tests, acceptable or good ratings in the updated moderate overlap front test, acceptable or good standard headlights, and acceptable or good pedestrian front crash prevention. The updated moderate overlap test added a rear-seat dummy and put greater focus on back-seat protection. See the IIHS award criteria.
Top Safety Pick
The 2024 standard award required good ratings in the small overlap front, original moderate overlap front, and updated side tests, plus acceptable or good standard headlights and pedestrian front crash prevention. The standard award did not require the updated moderate overlap front result required for the Plus tier. IIHS describes the revisions in its February 27, 2024 criteria announcement.

How to compare the prices fairly
The table uses one consistent source: Cars.com’s reported model-year 2024 prices, which include destination. They are not current dealer quotes, and the figures should not be treated as transaction prices today.
A separate May 22, 2024 IIHS and Consumer Reports release cited Kelley Blue Book New Car Fair Purchase Prices for each model’s least expensive trim, as of April 19, 2024, rounded to the nearest $100. Those are estimates of fair purchase price, not MSRP, and should not be mixed with the Cars.com prices as if they shared a method. In that separate snapshot, the Mazda CX-30 was $25,700, Kia Sportage $27,300, Hyundai Tucson $27,800, Honda CR-V $29,700, and Mazda CX-50 $31,200. For a real purchase comparison, consider the exact trim and drivetrain, local taxes and fees, insurance, and the vehicle’s award eligibility. IIHS and Consumer Reports advise shoppers to get an insurance quote for the specific vehicle; a low starting price alone does not determine total ownership cost.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why size and exact vehicle eligibility matter
IIHS organizes awards by vehicle size category and cautions that a smaller award-winning vehicle may not protect occupants as well as a larger vehicle without an award. A shared badge across differently sized SUVs is therefore not proof of identical crash protection. The Institute’s award is a useful screening tool, not a substitute for considering size, the people who will ride in the vehicle, and the exact model and build date.
