For shoppers comparing new small SUVs in the U.S., value is more than the lowest starting price: fuel economy, usable space, all-wheel-drive availability, equipment and driving comfort can matter just as much. These ten candidates have listed starting prices below $30,000, but the figures are not dealer quotes or total ownership costs. The selection is a practical comparison—not a universal ranking—and each model has a trade-off worth checking against your needs.
How to compare affordable crossovers fairly
The starting prices and combined mileage below are those listed in Car and Driver’s current subcompact SUV ranking, accessed October 5, 2026. They are not guaranteed transaction prices, and the cited figures do not establish whether destination charges are included. The Mazda is a special case: Car and Driver lists a different starting price from Mazda’s manufacturer release, so both are shown with attribution. Confirm the price basis, model year, destination charge and exact trim with the manufacturer or dealer before comparing quotes.
Combined mpg figures are EPA figures as displayed by Car and Driver, not promises of what every driver will achieve. Mileage varies with configuration and driving conditions. The comparison also does not establish taxes, dealer fees, financing, insurance, maintenance, depreciation or lifetime cost. A vehicle advertised below $30,000 can exceed that amount once the chosen trim and transaction costs are included.
To make “more for the money” concrete, the entries pair each starting price and mileage range with a useful advantage and a known compromise. Equipment can differ by model year and trim; verify the specific vehicle rather than assuming every version includes the same features.

Which affordable crossover gives you the most for the money?
The best fit depends on what you value most. The Kia Niro Hybrid leads this group on listed combined mileage, while the Chevrolet Trax has the lowest listed starting price. The Honda HR-V is worth considering for cabin and cargo utility, and the Subaru Crosstrek for buyers who place a premium on capability beyond paved roads. Those strengths do not make one model the best choice for every household.
| Model year and crossover | Listed starting price | Combined mpg shown | Value advantage | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Chevrolet Trax | $23,495 | 30 | Lowest listed entry price in this group; reviewers describe its construction and driving experience as strong for the price. | A 2025 comparison says there was no AWD option; verify 2026 availability and equipment by trim. |
| 2026 Nissan Kicks | $24,305 | 30–31 | Price-conscious choice with optional AWD noted in a 2025 comparison. | That comparison flags modest acceleration and lower real-world fuel economy than expected; check 2026 details. |
| 2026 Buick Envista | $26,495 | 30 | Styling and efficient powertrain; a 2025 review cited generous legroom and an 11-inch standard screen. | The same review noted cargo and roofline compromises and no AWD option; confirm whether those details carry over to 2026. |
| 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross | $26,930 | 30–32 | Efficiency paired with utility, according to the ranking’s review. | The available source summary does not establish a specific trim-level equipment or cabin-space comparison; inspect the version you would buy. |
| 2026 Hyundai Kona | $27,100 | 26–31 | Car and Driver describes it as equipment-rich for its size. | The wide mileage range underscores the importance of configuration; verify the equipment and EPA figure for the trim in your quote. |
| 2026 Volkswagen Taos | $27,975 | 28–31 | Car and Driver describes it as nimble and roomy. | Confirm the configuration-specific equipment and mileage rather than treating the range as one trim’s result. |
| 2026 Mazda CX-30 | $27,870 listed by Car and Driver; $25,975 starting MSRP in Mazda’s September 18, 2025 release | 25–27 | Car and Driver praises the upscale-feeling interior and responsive driving character. Mazda says AWD is standard. | Cabin utility is tight. The two listed starting prices differ, and the available information does not resolve the price-basis or timing difference. |
| 2026 Honda HR-V | $28,050 | 27–28 | Edmunds praises its cargo and rear-seat room. | Edmunds also notes limited power; its comparison was published in 2025 and should not be read as a full 2026 trim specification. |
| 2026 Subaru Crosstrek | $28,445 | 26–29 | Car and Driver highlights off-road capability alongside reasonable mileage. | Compare the actual trim’s equipment and EPA rating; the cited summary does not establish every configuration’s details. |
| 2026 Kia Niro Hybrid | $28,885 | 49–53 | Highest listed combined mileage in this group, with a hybrid powertrain. | Car and Driver notes less hustle than some rivals; the mpg range is not a guarantee for every driving condition. |
How to choose based on what you need
Lowest listed starting price
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax leads this comparison at $23,495, with 30 combined mpg shown. Its price advantage is clearest if the available equipment and drivetrain meet your needs. A 2025 comparison reported no AWD option, so do not assume all-wheel drive is available on the 2026 model without checking the current specifications.

Lower fuel use
The 2026 Kia Niro Hybrid’s listed 49–53 combined mpg stands apart from the gas-powered candidates here, whose listed ranges run from 25 to 32 mpg. If you drive enough for fuel use to weigh heavily in your decision, compare the Niro’s purchase quote with the alternatives and consider your annual mileage. The cited figures alone do not establish how quickly any price difference would be recovered.
People and cargo space
Edmunds praised the HR-V’s rear-seat and cargo room, while the 2025 Envista comparison cited legroom but flagged cargo and roofline limitations. The Mazda CX-30 is the opposite sort of proposition: its cabin is praised for its upscale feel, but its utility is tight. Take the people and items you routinely carry to a test drive; published impressions cannot determine whether a particular cabin works for your household.

AWD and capability
Mazda says AWD is standard on the 2026 CX-30. A 2025 comparison described AWD as optional on the Nissan Kicks, while earlier comparisons cited no AWD option on the Trax and Envista. These details are not interchangeable across model years: verify current availability and trim requirements before deciding. The Crosstrek is the candidate in this list that Car and Driver specifically highlights for off-road capability.
Cabin equipment and driving feel
Car and Driver characterizes the Kona as equipment-rich, the Taos as nimble, and the CX-30 as engaging with a near-luxury-feeling interior. Those are useful starting points, not a substitute for comparing standard features on the trim you can afford. For example, Mazda’s 2026 CX-30 information lists adaptive cruise control, smart braking, lane-keeping assistance and blind-spot monitoring; feature availability on competing vehicles should be checked against their current trim specifications.

What to check before you buy
- Compare actual quotes. Ask for the selling price, destination charge, dealer fees, taxes and any add-ons as separate line items. Starting MSRP does not tell you the out-the-door price.
- Match model year and trim. Confirm the year, drivetrain, engine, safety features and infotainment equipment on the exact vehicle. Do not carry a 2025 comparison detail forward as a confirmed 2026 specification.
- Check the EPA figure for that configuration. The table’s ranges may reflect different versions. Compare the figure for the trim and drivetrain on your quote, and treat it as an estimate rather than a real-world guarantee.
- Test your practical priorities. Try the rear seat, cargo opening and driving position with your usual passengers or gear. If you need AWD, verify that it is offered on the exact trim and understand the price and fuel-economy implications.
- Compare ownership costs separately. Get insurance estimates and review financing, maintenance and warranty terms for the specific model year. The starting-price and mpg figures here do not settle those costs.
Model-year and price caveats
Car and Driver’s current ranking also includes a 2027 Kia Seltos, listed at $26,485 with 26–30 combined mpg and described as a new second generation. It is not included in the ten-vehicle 2026 comparison above because it is a different model year. If shopping across years, compare it only after confirming local availability, exact specifications and pricing against the 2026 vehicles.
For the Mazda CX-30, Car and Driver lists $27,870, while Mazda North American Operations’ September 18, 2025 release states a $25,975 starting MSRP for the 2026 model. Because the available information does not reconcile those figures, neither should be treated as a definitive out-the-door price; confirm the current manufacturer price and destination charge for the trim you are considering.
