If you want to spend less than you would on many full-size SUVs, start by comparing 2026 midsize models. The closest fit for shoppers who still need three rows is a lower-priced three-row midsize SUV; if you rarely use the third row, a two-row model may be a better-value alternative. Neither choice automatically matches a full-size SUV’s passenger room, cargo capacity, towing or capability.
Which alternatives keep a third row?
These seven 2026 models appear on Car and Driver’s affordable three-row SUV ranking, which says the vehicles have base prices under $50,000 and standard third rows. Its list is ranked using MSRP and ratings based on roughly 200 data points, including comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value and driving enjoyment. The listed prices and combined-MPG estimates are editorial snapshots, not a quote for a specific trim or local purchase.
| 2026 model | Starting price shown | Combined fuel economy shown |
|---|---|---|
| Mitsubishi Outlander | $32,255 | 28 mpg |
| Kia Sorento | $33,885 | 23–26 mpg |
| Hyundai Santa Fe | $36,650 | 23–24 mpg |
| Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid | $38,000 | 34–36 mpg |
| Nissan Pathfinder | $39,045 | 21–23 mpg |
| Ford Explorer | $40,260 | 20–24 mpg |
| Kia Sorento Hybrid | $40,385 | 33–37 mpg |
Prices and fuel-economy ranges in the table are those displayed by Car and Driver for its 2026 ranking; confirm the manufacturer’s current price, destination-charge treatment and EPA estimate for the exact trim and drivetrain before comparing offers. A range can reflect different configurations, so it is not a promise that every version achieves the high end.
Lower entry prices: Outlander and Sorento
The Outlander and Sorento are the lowest-priced entries in Car and Driver’s list. Kelley Blue Book also identifies the 2026 Sorento at $33,885 as its cheapest three-row SUV, while its page lists the Outlander at $31,740 as its cheapest midsize SUV and describes it as a three-row vehicle. That Outlander figure differs from Car and Driver’s $32,255 snapshot; the sources do not establish whether their price presentations treat destination charges the same way. Check the current manufacturer listing and the dealer’s itemized quote rather than treating either figure as a guaranteed transaction price. Hybrid options in the listed group
Car and Driver lists the Santa Fe Hybrid at 34–36 combined mpg and the Sorento Hybrid at 33–37 combined mpg, compared with the conventional versions’ listed ranges of 23–24 and 23–26 combined mpg, respectively. These are useful candidates if fuel economy is a priority, but compare the exact hybrid trim’s price and EPA rating with the nonhybrid trim you would actually buy. The ranking’s figures alone do not establish your fuel-cost savings, which depend on driving, fuel prices and purchase price.
A higher-space comparison point
Toyota positions the 2026 Grand Highlander as a three-row midsize SUV. Toyota lists its starting MSRP at $42,260 and estimated fuel economy at 21/28 city/highway mpg; with the bench-seat configuration, Toyota says it seats up to eight. The 2026 Grand Highlander Hybrid starts at $45,610 with estimated fuel economy of 36/32 city/highway mpg. These are Toyota’s manufacturer figures, and the city/highway format should not be compared directly with the combined-MPG numbers in the table. Toyota also lists the 2026 Highlander at $46,270. Which alternatives make sense if you do not need three rows?
A two-row midsize SUV can be a sensible alternative when the third row is rarely used and carrying fewer people is acceptable. Car and Driver’s 2026 affordable midsize SUV ranking includes the Chevrolet Blazer at $36,295, Jeep Wrangler at $38,030 and Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport at $39,775. The cited ranking does not present these as three-row replacements: consider them only if two rows meet your needs. Confirm seating, configuration and current price with the manufacturer for the vehicle you are considering.
How to choose without buying more SUV than you need
- Decide how often you need the third row. Count the people you routinely carry and consider whether occasional extra passengers justify keeping a third row. If not, include two-row models in your comparison rather than paying for seats you seldom use.
- Try the seating layout in person. Bring the people who will ride in the vehicle and check access to the third row, seating comfort and the space left for cargo with all intended seats raised. The listed sources do not provide a consistent, apples-to-apples cargo-space comparison for every model, so a specification alone cannot settle the fit.
- Compare the powertrain and fuel-economy figure on the same basis. Match the exact trim and drivetrain, and compare combined with combined or city/highway with the corresponding city/highway figures. Toyota’s cited Grand Highlander figures are city/highway estimates, unlike the combined estimates in Car and Driver’s table.
- Build a local, itemized price comparison. Starting MSRP is a shortlist filter, not an out-the-door price. Ask for the same details on each quote, including destination, options, taxes, dealer fees, incentives and financing terms; regional inventory and eligibility can change the final cost. The cited rankings do not establish local transaction prices or financing terms.
- Check capability only against a specific need. If towing, rough-road use or another capability matters, verify the rating for the exact trim and drivetrain in current manufacturer information. The cited rankings do not establish a comparable set of towing or capability figures for these models.
What a lower-priced midsize SUV does—and does not—replace
The 2026 three-row midsize list gives shoppers several alternatives below the $50,000 starting-price threshold used by Car and Driver’s ranking. That does not make them equivalent to a full-size SUV. Before choosing, make sure the real vehicle fits your household’s passengers and luggage with the seats configured as you use them, and verify any towing or capability requirement for the exact version. Also compare current itemized prices, not just ranking-page starting figures. The sources cited here do not establish comparable cargo volumes, reliability rankings, warranty coverage or local transaction costs across the models.
